Texas looking to close the 2024 cycle with a trio of five-star commitments

There’s no college football program with more momentum on the field after last weekend than Texas. And that’s translating over to the recruiting trail as well.

Despite sitting outside the top-15 of the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings as it stands today, the Longhorns are in position to make a big move in the coming weeks.

On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons wrote on Monday that the Longhorns are trending with a pair of five-star targets: wide receiver Ryan Wingo and offensive tackle Brandon Baker. The latter is set to announce his commitment on Sept. 24. Wingo meanwhile, has a commitment date set for Dec. 20, but has said he is considering moving that date up.

“Let’s look out of state at two prospects that Texas is in a strong position with. One will be in town this weekend for the Wyoming game. That is five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo out of St. Louis University School,” Simmons said. “Missouri played this past weekend at home and Wingo was not in attendance. He will now make the trip to Austin in the coming days. What does that mean? Texas is very deep in this, and the Longhorns have some momentum. Tennessee has faded. Texas A&M is trying to hang around. This one has become a battle between in-state Missouri and Texas. This visit is very big, and Wingo could be nearing a decision. There is some confidence in Austin that they can pull Wingo from the in-state school.

Brandon Baker is scheduled for an official visit to Nebraska this weekend before he commits to a school on Sept. 24. The Huckers have a lot ground to make up, but Baker visited Lincoln in the spring and he continues to have Matt Rhule’s program on his list. Nebraska, Ohio State and Oregon go into this weekend chasing Texas though. The Longhorns have done a great job connecting with Baker, laying out their plan to him and that has them in a strong position less than two weeks out.”

Wingo and Baker aren’t the only big fish Texas is in a good spot with, though. The Longhorns have been trending in the On3 Recruiting Prediction (RPM) for months with five-star cornerback Kobe Black out of Waco (Texas) Connally. He was originally set for an official with LSU this past weekend but canceled it and has not rescheduled.

Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M and others remain in the mix, but the RPM currently gives Texas a 93.5 percent chance of landing his commitment. Should the Longhorns land each of the three five-stars, they would leap into the top-10 of the team recruiting rankings and be in contention for a third-straight top-five class.
