Playing on both sides of the football at Denton (Texas) Ryan, Ja'Tavion Sanders arrived at Texas as a high school All-American and with a ranking that put him in the top 12 overall in the country. He appeared primarily on special teams in the 2021 season before having a breakout sophomore year in 2022. Sanders was a first-team All-Big 12 pick and a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award after catching 54 passes for 613 yards and five touchdowns. The 54 catches were the most for a tight end in Texas Longhorn history. Sanders entered 2023 as a preseason all-league and All-America pick according to numerous publications. He topped the 100-yard mark in Texas victories at Alabama and Baylor.
