Smith Orogbo didn’t start playing football until his freshman year of high school. “I was a basketball and track athlete before I started playing football my freshman year,” Orogbo told VYPE Houston. “I've loved the sport once I started, and I love the feeling of dominating on the field.” He definitely did that, according to former Alief Hastings coach Tomas De La Rosa. "I'm telling you what, his ceiling is just off the charts," De La Rosa told 247Sports. "He started eating up the weight room. He's got long arms, fast-twitch muscles, he can play up, he can play down. He's just relentless. We had to pull him out of practice just so we can get a ball off. He's just getting after it. Orogbo had a massive junior season at Alief Hastings, registering triple-digit total tackles and nearly double-digit sacks. "His leadership and instincts of learning what to do, what not to do," De La Rosa said. "Some of his techniques, using his hands, using his speed. His motor is always (running). It's just being able to put all the tools together now. Like I tell people, if he screws up it's because you told him something different. But it's nothing but upside."
