Why Does Texas Keep Hitting On Their Edge Takes?

Smith Orogbo

Smith Orogbo didn’t start playing football until his freshman year of high school. “I was a basketball and track athlete before I started playing football my freshman year,” Orogbo told VYPE Houston. “I've loved the sport once I started, and I love the feeling of dominating on the field.” He definitely did that, according to former Alief Hastings coach Tomas De La Rosa. "I'm telling you what, his ceiling is just off the charts," De La Rosa told 247Sports. "He started eating up the weight room. He's got long arms, fast-twitch muscles, he can play up, he can play down. He's just relentless. We had to pull him out of practice just so we can get a ball off. He's just getting after it. Orogbo had a massive junior season at Alief Hastings, registering triple-digit total tackles and nearly double-digit sacks. "His leadership and instincts of learning what to do, what not to do," De La Rosa said. "Some of his techniques, using his hands, using his speed. His motor is always (running). It's just being able to put all the tools together now. Like I tell people, if he screws up it's because you told him something different. But it's nothing but upside."

Smith Orogbo's frame, play style and high motor remind us of Bradley Chubb at the same stage.

The top of the scale — national-caliber talent that every major program pursues, with a clear NFL trajectory.

Elite / Top 100

Highly disruptive edge defender with a projectable frame, high effort level and the upside to become a dangerous pass rusher. Measured in at 6-foot-4 and around 220 pounds prior to his senior season. Has plus length and a big frame with 33 ⅞-inch arms and 9.75-inch hands. Added close to 20 pounds during his junior year. Lives in the backfield on Friday nights. Extremely active, as evidenced by his 100+ tackles and 9 sacks as a junior. Shows good first-step quickness. Converts speed to power as a bull rusher. Plays with a natural strength that belies his size. Fights through blocks at the point of attack. Dogged in pursuit, running down plays from the back side. A physical finisher and run defender. Plays with an elite effort level and doesn’t give up on plays. Newer to football, with his first year of the sport coming as a freshman, previously being a basketball and track athlete. Missed the majority of his senior season with an injury. Will need to continue honing his actual pass rush skill set, as he is primarily a ‘see ball, get ball’ defender at the moment. Younger for the cycle, turning 17 years-old in May of his junior year. Has the upside to be the best EDGE prospect in the 2025 cycle with continued physical and technical development.
