Houston parts ways with head women's basketball coach Ronald Hughey

Houston has parted ways with head women’s basketball coach Ronald Hughey, sources told On3. Hughey had been at the helm of the Cougars since 2014, leading the program for a decade. During his tenure, he guided the Cougars to one 20-plus win season in 2018.
The Cougars have struggled to return to national relevance, coming up short of an NCAA Tournament appearance in each year since the 2010-11 season, when they were led by former head coach Todd Buchanan. Houston made three appearances in the WNIT in 2018, 2019 and 2021. The Cougars transitioned from the AAC to the Big 12 in 2023 and have struggled to compete in the P5 ranks.

This season, Houston finished with a 5-25 overall record and a 1-17 mark in Big 12 play.
Before taking over as Houston’s head coach, Hughey built an extensive resume as a top assistant coach at multiple high-major programs. He had coaching stints at South Carolina State, South Carolina, UCF, Rutgers, Texas and Florida State. During this period from 2008 to 2014, all six of the teams he worked with earned NCAA Tournament berths.
With his departure, the Cougars will now begin a search to find their next head women’s basketball coach.
