On Sunday, Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham suffered an apparent knee injury in the second quarter against the Connecticut Sun. Cunningham remained on the ground after the injury and had to be helped to the locker room.

At the time of her injury, Cunningham had one rebound in the game and the Fever trailed 28-13. The Fever announced Cunningham will not be returning to the game. The team needs a win today after losing four of their last five games.

Alas, it won’t be easy without Cunningham on the hardwood. The former Missouri standout has been pivotal to the Fever’s success this season with Caitlin Clark out due to a groin injury.

Cunningham is averaging 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 44.3% from beyond the arc. Cunningham is averaging 25.7 minutes of action per game.

The injury occurred when Sun guard Bria Hartley crashed into Cunningham on a drive to the basket. Hartley seemingly fell onto the lower part of Cunningham’s leg, causing the Fever star to hobble away on one leg while clutching her injured knee.

Cunningham has only missed five games this season. She missed the first two games of the year after suffering a right ankle injury in the Fever’s preseason finale. She re-aggravated her ankle injury on May 30 and missed three more games.

Cunningham is a fan favorite in Indiana. Her energy on the court and hilarious personality off it has endeared her to fans. Cunningham has also earned Indiana fans’ respect by never hesitating to defend Caitlin Clark from critics.

“It literally, like, pisses me off when people are like, ‘She’s not the face of the league,’” Cunningham said on her podcast, Show Me Something. “What? … There’s really good, well-known people in our league. I’m not discrediting them. We have a lot of badasses in our league. Like, hell yeah to that. I’m all for that.

“But when people try to argue that she’s not the face of our league or our league would be where we’re at without her, you’re dumb as s***. You’re literally dumb as f***.”

Now, Sophie Cunningham might be sitting next to Clark on the sidelines. Clark has been out with a groin injury since July 15.

On Sunday, Fever head coach Stephanie White said the team hopes for Clark to return to the court before the end of the regular season. The Fever are currently 18-16 and in third place in the WNBA Eastern Conference standings.
