It is playoff time in the state of Alabama. First-round action across all seven AHSAA classifications will commence this Friday, Nov. 7.

The Massey Ratings have updated once more heading into postseason action. The Central Red Devils hold the No. 1 spot in the state, while undefeated Clay-Chalkville is right behind at No. 2. Of the top 25 teams in the state, four are entering the playoffs undefeated.

Below are the updated top 25 high school football programs in Alabama ahead of the 2025 playoffs, according to the Massey Ratings:

1. Central Red Devils (7A)

One of the favorites to take home the 7A crown once again, Central enters the postseason at 9-1 and is on a four-game winning streak. It rolled JAG 62-6 last time out and will take on top-10 Hoover this Friday in a major first-round clash.

2. Clay-Chalkville Cougars (6A)

Likely considered by many to be the favorite in the 6A bracket, Clay-Chalkville enters undefeated at 10-0. The Cougars posses a potent offense that of course leans on the ground game, but senior QB Aaron Frye has continued to improve and is one to watch as his team pushes for another title. Clay-Chalkville opens against Jackson-Olin this Friday.

3. Thompson Warriors (7A)

Still a top-50 program nationally, the back half of the season has been rocky for Thompson. It now enters the playoffs at 7-3 following a win over ranked Prattville to close the regular season two weeks ago. The Warriors have as much blue-chip talent as anyone in the state. Their quest in the 16-man 7A bracket begins against No. 16 Carver, which it defeated 37-6 in the season-opener on Aug. 21.

4. Vestavia Hills Rebels (7A)

Vestavia Hills has won five games in a row, two of which came over ranked opponents. The 8-2 Rebels have hovered in and around the top five and now look to strike while the iron’s hot this month. They get a rematch against Auburn this Friday. Vestavia Hills rolled the Tigers 42-12 in the second game of the season on Aug. 28.

5. Saraland Spartans (6A)

If chalk holds, Saraland and Clay-Chalkville will meet in the 6A title game. Like the Cougars, the Spartans are also undefeated coming into the postseason. Powered by up-and-coming junior quarterback Jamison Roberts, Saraland will take on Wetumpka this Friday.

6. Hewitt-Trussville Huskies (7A)

Hewitt-Trussville got off to a dominant start but proceeded to drop two games in a row last month. The Huskies rebounded with a pair of wins to close the regular season and enter the 7A bracket with an 8-2 record. They’ll try and rush their way to a state title and it begins against No. 10 Opelika on Friday.

7. Auburn Tigers (7A)

Auburn will have revenge on its mind when it squares off against Vestavia Hills in the first round of the 7A playoffs this week. The 8-2 Tigers have proven to be much better than what they showed in the second week of the season in that 30-point loss to the Rebels. Auburn’s only other loss this season came against top-ranked Central and it’ll now try to make a run for the state title this month. The winner of Auburn-Vestavia Hills will be favored in the quarterfinals against the winner of Sparkman-Daphne.

8. Hoover Buccaneers (7A)

Hoover dropped each of its first three games at home but managed to find its stride in the back half of the season. The Buccaneers picked up multiple ranked wins, headlined by a 33-30 victory over Thompson on Oct. 17. Jonah Winston and Co. now get a chance to send a serious shockwave through the 7A bracket when they take on top-ranked Central this Friday.

9. Mary G Montgomery Vikings (7A)

Perhaps the sleeper team to watch in 7A, Mary G Montgomery enters with a 9-1 record. The Vikings played a much lighter schedule than most, but they do have three wins over top-30 teams in the state. Their lone loss came on Oct. 17 against No. 18 Baker. They’ll take on Austin this week, with the winner of that game taking over Thompson or Carver.

10. Opelika Bulldogs (7A)

Opelika closed the season strong with a big ranked victory over Carver on Oct. 24. That snapped a two-game skid for the Bulldogs, who now enter the 7A playoffs with a 7-3 record. They’ve played seven ranked teams this season and won four times, making them one of the more battle-tested teams in the state. Their bout against No. 6 Hewitt-Trussville this week will eliminate a big name early on this month.
