Connecticut's all-time winningest high school football coach will miss first game since 1981

When you think about Connecticut high school football and the model of consistency and longevity, New Canaan head coach Lou Marinelli has been just that ever since 1981 when he began coaching at his alma mater.

For the first time in nearly 45 years, Marinelli is going to miss a high school football game for the Rams.

According to a report by the New Canaan Advertiser, Connecticut’s all-time winningest high school football coach is set to miss his first game of his coaching career began back in the early 1980’s.

“Due to precautionary measures, Coach Marinelli will miss the 1st game in his over fifty-year coaching career on Friday Night,” in a statement provided by New Canaan Athletic Director Jay Egan from Marinelli’s family via the report. “He is in good health and expects to be back on the sidelines shortly.  In his absence, Chris Silvestri will serve as the acting head coach.”

In Marinelli’s time leading one of Connecticut’s top programs, the head coach has guided the Rams to 15 CIAC state championships and has New Canaan playing some of its best football currently. According to the latest Connecticut high school football rankings via Massey Ratings, New Canaan checks in as the No. 3 team in the state.

The Rams are looking to win a fourth consecutive Class L state championship this fall as they have claimed three straight titles heading into this 2025 campaign.

New Canaan is currently 7-0 on the season and is slated to take on Staples (5-2) this week. After facing Staples this week, New Canaan will finish the season with games against Trumbull and Darien, which the latter will be on Thanksgiving Day.
