Penn State commit becomes WPIAL all-time yardage leader

It has been quite the high school football career for Fort Cherry‘s (Pa.) Matt Sieg, a Penn State commit.
On Friday night, Sieg etched his name into Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) lore. In the Rangers’ 56-19 victory over Bishop Canevin on Friday night, the Penn State three-star safety pledge became the WPIAL all-time leader in total yardage, breaking Sto-Rox’s Lenny Williams’ mark of 11,559 yards, set in 2014, with 11,798.
According to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report, Sieg finished the historic night with 285 yards and three touchdowns. In total, Sieg scored five touchdowns on the night, three on the ground, a long punt return and a pick six.
It didn’t take long for Sieg to get the WPIAL record, as the Penn State commit scored on the first play of the game via a 70-yard run.
“It’s just super cool,” Sieg said via the report. “To do it here again in front of all these fans, against a good team, it’s just super special.”

Sieg is looking to lead Fort Cherry to its first-ever state championship in program history after coming close multiple times. In 2023, Sieg led Ft. Cherry to an undefeated, 15-0 regular season, before falling in the PIAA Class A state championship to Steel-High. Last season ended in disappointment as Fort Cherry ended up winning the WPIAL title game.
As a junior in 2024, Sieg threw for 1,350 yards, 20 touchdowns and on the ground totaled 1,840 yards with 32 scores. Defensively Sieg made 50 tackles and intercepted four passes.
The Rangers are now 8-0 on the season as they look to finish the regular season undefeated with games against Shenango and Serra Catholic remaining.
