The Commonwealth State kicked off Week 1 of their season and there were some surprises, close games and blowouts that occurred. Maury, despite losing their opener, remain the top ranked team out of Virginia this week.

The burning question is which other teams made the list of Top 25 teams in the state?

Here are the top 25 Virginia high school football teams, according to Massey.

1. Maury Commodores

Maybe one of the only teams in the country that was able to lose their first game and maintain their top ranked position was the Maury Commodores.

The Commodores dropped their regular season opener, 24-20, to Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.) last week. When looking at the next couple of weeks, however, this honestly could become a rougher start as they take on Varina and Bishop McNamara in the next two weeks.

Maury may be favored to win in both games via the Massey Ratings, but the Commodores were also picked to beat Cardinal Gibbons as well.

2. Benedictine Cadets

The Cadets took care of business in dominating fashion last week when they soundly defeated St. Michael in a 38-0 rout.

Benedictine starting the season off the way they did spells for an excellent path to being 5-0 before they face District of Columbia’s Gonzaga on Oct. 3. Taking an undefeated record into that contest would give the Cadets plenty of confidence as they look towards possibly going 10-0 or 9-1 this season.

Strength of Benedictine is with their offense, featuring Coastal Carolina commit Jojo Johnson and Wisconsin pledge Maddox Cochrane.

3. Oscar Smith Tigers

In what was somewhat of a surprising result, Oscar Smith went into the nation’s capital and wasn’t able to register a point in a 17-0 loss to Gonzaga. It was a surprising result seeing the kind of talent Oscar Smith has on the offensive end.

The Tigers’ offense should bounce back this week behind the play of signal caller Lonnie Andrews III and Michigan pledge Travis Johnson out at wide receiver. There’s too much talent on the offensive side of the ball for Oscar Smith to be shutout in consecutive weeks, in our opinion.

This week, the Tigers will look to get back on track against a Warwick team that lost 3-0 to North Carolina’s Mallard Creek.

4. Highland Springs Springers

Of the top five teams on this list, the Highland Springs Springers won probably the most convincingly of them all. The Springers cruised to a 68-12 shellacking of Hopewell heading into what might be arguably one of their toughest challenges of the season.

This week, Highland Springs will host a very good William Amos Hough out of North Carolina, a chance to make a statement as one of the region’s top teams. The Springers will need strong performances from Division I talents like junior Eric Byrd and sophomore Devlin Davis to pull off the upset.

5. Stone Bridge Bulldogs

Last but not least of the top five teams and heading into the rest of the Top 25 is the Stone Bridge Bulldogs, as they barely took care of business in a 7-0 win over Madison last week.

Stone Bridge’s strength lies on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the secondary where the team has multiple Power 4 recruits. In the defensive backfield, the Bulldogs feature Syracuse commit Chase Geter, UConn pledge Xavier Wimbush at safety and four-star sophomore Langston Pridgeon.

6. Varina (1-0)
7. Battlefield (1-0)
8. Phoebus (0-0)

10. Colonial Forge (1-0)

17. King’s Fork (0-0)
18. Westfield (1-0)
19. Riverbend (1-0)
20.
 St. Christopher’s School (1-0)

21. Indian River (1-0)
22. Madison (0-1)
23. Woodberry Forest (0-0)
24. North Stafford (0-1)
25. Tuscarora (1-0)
