The high school football season kicked off in Virginia last week, and many of the top programs in the Old Dominion were in action. Plenty of interesting results followed.

Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 Virginia high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Sept. 10.

1. Maury Commodores

After Cardinal Gibbons snapped their 31-game winning streak during the season opener, Virginia high school football’s top-ranked team returned to the win column via a 14-13 victory over Varina. The Commodores opened the scoring with a fumble return touchdown and won the game via a passing TD. Maury returns to action on September 12 against Maryland’s Bishop McNamara.

2. Benedictine Cadets

Two games into the season, the Cadets haven’t allowed any points. In their 38-0 victory over Matoaca, Benedictine scored 21 points in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach. After beating the Warriors, the Cadets will have another road game against Blue Ridge on September 12.

3. Oscar Smith Tigers

The Tigers earned their first victory this season, beating Warwick 24-6. Quarterback Lonnie Andrews III had a solid game, tallying 21 completions for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Oscar Smith will try to build some momentum from this win as they face Indian River on September 20.

4. Highland Springs Springers

After a dominating season-opening win against Hopewell, Virginia high school football’s fourth-best team dropped a close game against William Amos Hough, North Carolina’s top-ranked team. Antoine Richardson found Devlin Davis for Highland Springs’ first touchdown. Later in the game, Richardson returned an interception for a 40-yard touchdown return. Highland Springs can bounce back by defeating Dinwiddie on September 12.

5. Stone Bridge Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have completed two low-scoring victories. They defeated James Madison, 7-0, on August 28 and Maryland’s Dunbar a week later, 7-6. This victory against the Poets puts Stone Bridge two wins away from matching their 2024 win total. The Bulldogs can improve to 3-0 with a victory against John Champe on September 12.

6. Dinwiddie Generals

The Generals have lorded over the opposition in their first two games. Their latest victory was a 55-6 domination of Granby, in which Dinwiddie already scored 41 points by halftime. This week, the Generals will play another road game against Highland Springs on September 12.

7. Varina Blue Devils

The Blue Devils suffered a disappointing one-point loss against Maury. Varina had the lead with seven minutes left in the game until the Commodores scored a touchdown and an extra point. As the Blue Devils continue the 2025 Virginia high school football season, they can bounce back by earning a road victory over I.C. Norcom on September 12.

8. Battlefield Bobcats

The Bobcats are at 2-0 after an impressive 35-7 victory over Mountain View. Tyler Brown had 116 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Keaton Ramey finished with 170 receiving yards and two touchdowns. A September 12 home game against South Lakes presents Battlefield with an opportunity to improve to 3-0.

9. Colonial Forge Eagles

The Eagles have won their last four matchups against Patriot. In the latest edition of their rivalry, Colonial Forge completed a 32-7 victory, thanks to quarterback Brock Brimhall’s 259 total yards (221 passing) and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Taysean Jones had 88 receiving yards and a touchdown. The Eagles can improve to 3-0 by defeating Gainesville on September 12.

10. Phoebus Phantoms

The Phantoms are still among the state’s top ten teams, even if they haven’t played a single game. After all, they went 14-0 last season and captured the Virginia high school football Class 4 state championship. Phoebus will play a game against Denbigh on September 12.
