The latest set of Virginia high school football Top 25 rankings has seen plenty of movement in the last couple of weeks as teams are starting to find their footing as the season progresses.
The Maury Commodores as the state’s No. 1 ranked team, followed by Benedictine and Dinwiddie. Which other teams join them in this week’s rankings?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Virginia high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Sep. 23.
1. Maury Commodores
The Maury Commodores stay atop of the Virginia high school football rankings after notching their second straight win of the season, a 38-35 victory over Bishop McNamara.
When looking at the Commodores, this team has plenty of talent to remain at the top the rest of the way, including on offense at the wide receiver position. Maury features James Madison commitment Elijah Moss-Williams and Jahvon Wiggins. Junior running back TayShawn Branche had a big hand in the win against Bishop McNamara, rushing for 159 yards and scoring a touchdown.
Next up for Commodores is a matchup against undefeated Churchland (4-0).
2. Benedictine Cadets
The reigning VISAA Division I state champions have won seven straight games, including four from this season. Through four games, Benedictine has out-scored their opponents 166-3 this season. The Cadets have been arguably the state’s most dominant team to date and it hasn’t been all that close whatsoever.
The Cadets’ offense is led by Wisconsin commit Maddox Cochrane and Coastal Carolina pledge Jojo Johnson.
Up next for Benedictine is a matchup against another undefeated squad in St. Christopher’s School (4-0).
3. Dinwiddie Generals
The Dinwiddie Generals (4-0) have been very impressive through the first half of the season thus far, with the latest victory being a 42-0 defeat over winless Salem.
Dinwiddie has received solid play from senior quarterback Zion Boisseau, who has amassed over 800 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Now heading to the midway point, the Generals are looking to remain undefeated when they take on another winless team in Matoaca on Friday night.
4. Oscar Smith Tigers
Ever since losing the season opener to Gonzaga, Tigers have followed it up by beating Warwick 24-6 and Indian River, 33-20. Oscar Smith, the defending Class 6 state champions, will look to make it three in a row this week when they face off against undefeated King’s Fork (3-0).
