While the state is more known for hockey and wrestling, the Minnesota high school football scene still offers fierce competition and passionate fanbases. From perennial powers to upstart challengers, here are the top 25 Minnesota high school football teams according to Massey.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. Maple Grove Crimson

The Crimson completed a perfect 13-0 season to capture the Minnesota high school football Class AAAAAA state championship. It’s a remarkable transformation from a team that finished 7-3 in 2023-24. Offensive lineman Matthew Perusse and Maple Grove’s title defense start against Stillwater on August 28.

2. Minnetonka Skippers

The Skippers won three straight games after losing three of four games. However, Maple Grove shut down their state championship hopes, ending their season at 9-4. Minnetonka will be back with a vengeance this season, and they’ll start their campaign against East Ridge on August 28. Quarterback Caden Gutzmer and three-star running back Caleb Francois will carry the load on offense.

3. Shakopee Sabers

The Sabers had winning streaks of four and six games last season. Despite those impressive runs, they fell short against Maple Grove in the Minnesota high school football Class AAAAAA state semifinals. This year, Shakopee will start its campaign against Eagan on August 28. Linebacker Blake Betton will be one of their bright spots on defense.

4. Eden Prairie Eagles

It was a roller-coaster season for the Eagles, ending with a shutout loss to Maple Grove in the second round of the Class AAAAAA state tournament. Eden Prairie will start their 2025-26 journey with their game against Anoka on August 28.

5. Edina Hornets

The Hornets lost only twice in 11 games before facing Maple Grove in the Class AAAAAA quarterfinals. Sadly, that matchup ended their season at 9-3, which is nearly identical to their 9-4 finish in 2023. Edina will open the 2025-26 Minnesota high school football season against Hopkins on August 28. Quarterback Mason West and defensive lineman Sawyer Jezierski will lead the way for the Hornets.
