Expectations versus Reality

The goal is to win a title. Making a final four is a consolation prize. Anything else is a season I’ll never thing about again.

A 10+ loss regular season, finishing worse than 4th in the SEC, and losing in the S16 is not an acceptable season. It was ok year 1, but that’s not acceptable here.

Last year was a bust for many reasons. As a fan all we should expect is a team who is competitive and has a chance to win in every game. Thats the Expectations. Let’s be Open Minded about the group that’s being assembled. We are a Long Way away from the Reality!

Duke made a final 4 last year, Purdue made one a couple years ago with Bama, UNC made a natty game under Hubert and Houston was in the natty last year, Kansas won a title a few years ago, and UT has never made a final 4 so I’m not sure why they’re being listed. At some point you have to be willing to say it’s been too long since we made a final 4 and that drought needs to stop immediately. People would be going nuts if Duke hadn’t made the final 4 in 10+ years so should we tbh. And if you go back and look at UK coaches literally since Rupp every single one besides Billy G has made a minimum of an Elite 8 in their first 3 years.

This is Kentucky basketball anything worse than an elite eight is a disappointment of a season. I’m not going to let a bad coach and a couple bad seasons change the standards I have for Kentucky basketball every year.

Was thinking about this last night. Everyone was excited about a S16 in year 1 because the assumption was we would see talent upgrades and optimism was high because if he can take tha group of misfits to the second weekend, what happens when he gets true talent? Unfortunately it appears we were wrong. Just doesn’t seem that he’s capable of accumulating championship level talent.

We aren't getting the talent to be competitive in the SEC. We are middle of the pack in our own conference.

I think expectations amongst some fans are so far from reasonable. I'ld like for us to be in discussion nationally for champioship often. Doesn't mean we're going to get there as you pointed out. I've managed to witness 4 of those titles, with the prior being the year of my birth lol.

Kentucky has been unranked once in the preseason since they got off probation. It was the only season that a Kentucky basketball coach has been fired after since probation as well. Curious to see if he gets a preseason top 25 roster together.

Not really. Usually it’s “I can’t believe that team lost to West Virginia.” if that had been Cal’s third, fourth, fifth etc. team it would never come up.

Literally my only thoughts when it comes to that team. Obviously love the individuals but I hate thinking about that season because we underachieved

Not competitive in the SEC? If I remember right we beat the SEC and the NCAA Campion Florida in 2025.

Na I don't care at all about the 40's-50's. Completely different game. It's a fact that no-one cares about elite 8 teams. No banners for that.

We need to be relevant again. Haven’t been in years We should ALWAYS be ranked. We should always compete for tops in our conference. Doesn’t mean we win it every year but we should be in the running. We should be playing in the SECT finals more than we have. We should be an Elite 8 and a better program more years than not. A title now and then would be great but you have to be realistic in the expectation. They are tough to get.

“This is Kentucky basketball” What does that statement even mean? What is Kentucky basketball? We’ve hung our hat on what championships in the 50s?

The expectations should always be to be in contention for a championship. Finish in the top 5 of the SEC. Be consistently ranked in the top 20. Go into the NCAA tournament as a 4 seed or better. Don’t routinely get upset by mid-major teams in the opening game. Remain a top 5 team in terms of relevance in MBB (recruiting, budget, buzz, etc). Those are not unreasonable expectations given our sustained success over decades. Doesn’t mean we expect a final 4 every year. What we have experienced in the last 7-8 years is an erosion of our standard. We are no longer the program that we were so proud of, that other teams feared and loathed, that kids grew up dreaming of playing for. The media and rival coaches now openly mock us. It is a bad feeling for so many of us that are so passionate about UK. People outside of BBN will never understand it. We don’t know how to process the emotions we now feel. Some are constantly negative, others are just angry, some fake overconfidence, some defiantly defend, and sadly, a growing portion of BBN is becoming apathetic. This is the real danger. When we no longer care it’s over. is Pope the man to pull us out of this spiral? The evidence says no, he’s just not good enough at all the aspects needed. This is a tough job, why it pays so well. Hopefully our next AD can find that rare coach that is up for the challenge.
