And that is why you don’t fire Hubert. The injury was unfortunate and with him that lead we had that was close to 20 expands to 30 plus with Caleb. The team Hubert coached and built was a final 4 contender with Caleb healthy. So you can’t fire him. Yes the guards sucked but he was stuck with Seth who handicapped this team like he was stuck with RJ last year. Couldn’t get rid of them and can’t win with them.
2024 1 seed beat Duke twice he had a bad RJ night and hot Bama team that cost us a final 4.
Beating Duke and K in his last Cameron game and then in the final 4 to retire K earns him 10 years no matter what. That was the best feeling ever and two of the biggest wins in program history.
Not his fault the GM lowballed Nick Boyd. We needed a PG and Tanner didn’t deliver. Hubert wins natty next year with Mingo Dixon (off the bench), Stevenson, Henri, Adams. and 2 portal studs.
Viva Hubert!

Without Caleb and up by 19 in the second half you should still win.

We've built and given up leads with all manner of player and roster over the last 5 years. I don't think you can keep doing this over and over. There's not a lot of evidence to suggest this pattern is going to change. If he's not a slam dunk after 5 years, he's probably not a slam dunk 3 years from now either.

With Caleb we lost to 3 teams that didn't make the field of 64.

The problem is that we’ve seen this play out for 5 years. If it was just this one year, I’d agree. However, it’s happened from year one (like Baylor game) and countless other times. It’s year 5 and it hasn’t improved. There have been glimpses, but zero consistency.

This might be true, but I honestly don't think it's that relevant to the decision about retaining Hubert. The loss was directly due to game management within this game. Specifically, making the same bench utilization mistakes he's been making since year one. That is part of the reason we want stall ball so early.
Maybe Caleb would have done a better job staying in front of Hill than Jarin, but that's again not what's at issue. The strategic decision making was wrong. The players might have won the game anyway, but that wouldn't have made the decision making right.

Who cares? Is our goal to beat VCU?
We’ve been a top-4 seed one time in 5 years and weren’t tracking there with Caleb.
People are ok with UNC becoming a loser program. It’s baffling to me.

He didn’t call timeouts properly, didn’t lead his team, didn’t reset the team when they were struggling, overplayed players, made no adjustments, and a more experienced coach wins this game simply by doing some of these things. I lover Hubert. He is everything I could want to be our HC. He has smarts, understands the game, was a brilliant player, was coached by the best, has the intensity, but his tenure has been inconsistent. Bad starts to games, we only play our best when our backs are against the wall, inability to guard the 3, adapt to picks, call set plays for easy baskets, etc. Hubert is a brilliant analyst and likely identifies issues and addresses them but his message gets lost and doesn’t translate onto the court. We blow 15 pt leads to Kansas in the title game and 19 pt lead with VCU and this is just too characteristic of his tenure. After 5 years, what is the culture/identity of the Hubert era? Tanner could have landed Boyd, and our first options and we would be in the same spot. He is not the problem. And that is why you don’t fire Hubert. Hubert is the coach who had Caleb dunking in practice like he didn’t just break his hand. Someone with a baseline IQ should know that’s fucking stupid.
