WATCH: Akron misses game-winning layup in hilarious fashion

College basketball is back, with Akron playing host to South Dakota State in a Monday night season opener. Both wanting to get a quality win on the resume early in the season, the Zips seemed keen to get a win late in the second half.
That was until disaster hilariously occurred.
South Dakota State had the opportunity to get a game-winning shot off but when trying to switch the ball, Akron’s Greg Tribble was there to intercept the pass. As he broke toward the bucket with nobody in his area code, he went up for the layup. Somehow, someway, Tribble missed the shot as the buzzer excited.

Instead of being the hero, Tribble would have another five minutes to play in overtime. It’s early in the season for everyone in college basketball, even if gifted what should be the easiest two points.
You can watch the full moment here.
Thankfully for Tribble, Akron was able to get the win in overtime, saving his miss from being the difference between a win and a loss. It’s a quality win for the Zips, who are looking to once again make the NCAA Tournament. South Dakota State will be looking to get there themselves.

More on Akron basketball
Akron finished second in the MAC last season but since they won the conference tournament, they were able to play into the month of March. A similar path will have to be taken this year under head coach John Groce. The Zips were voted third in the preseason bowl, with Kent State and Toledo ahead.
Next up for Akron will be Mississippi State in the Barstool Sports Invitational in Philadelphia, PA. Starting off strong on Monday night against South Dakota State, a win vs. an SEC opponent would help boost the resume even further for Groce’s team.
