Both schools played nonconference opponents leading into the rivalry game but had incredibly different results. Alabama stayed on their winning ways, taking care of Chattanooga. Second-string players got plenty of reps, gaining experience potentially for the future.
Auburn had quite the opposite type of Saturday. Freeze saw his squad lose to a good New Mexico State team by three touchdowns, a stunning moment for the program. Now, the huge task of facing off against a College Football Playoff hopeful is upon them.

A bit cliche when it comes to a football rivalry but you truly can throw out the record books on Saturday. Especially with the games being played on the Plains. Weirder things have happened as both teams will need to come in prepared to play at a high level.
Nick Saban historically struggles against Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium
You do not have to tell Alabama or Auburn fans what happened a decade ago. They all remember the 2013 Iron Bowl, with some people reading this having a smile on their faces and others shaking their heads in disgust. It’s that type of Jordan-Hare Stadium magic you can never count out when these two play on the Plains.
Saban has struggled in the Iron Bowl on the road, having just two wins out of his last five trips. A couple have been absolute heartbreakers while Bryce Young‘s drive and eventual 4OT win will be remembered forever in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama is still alive in the College Football Playoff but is on incredibly thin ice. Auburn will be hoping to finally crack it open, end the Crimson Tide’s hopes, and get a marquee win to end Freeze’s first season.
