Georgia found itself on a roll in its opening possession of the second half against Alabama. However, momentum stopped for a brief moment due to a booth review. They wanted to check on a possible targeting on Crimson Tide defensive lineman James Smith.

After looking at the play, the officials confirmed the targeting call. Smith was ejected from the game, missing the final parts of the third quarter and all of the fourth. He will also be suspended for the first half of Alabama’s next game, which is on Oct. 4 against Vanderbilt in Tuscaloosa.

Looking at the replay, the ESPN broadcast first thought LT Overton might be the one in question. However, Smith came from the left side of the screen as the Georgia ball carrier fell to the ground. The booth determined the crown of the helmet was used, calling the penalty.

ESPN rules official Bill Lemmonnier gave a brief explanation from his perspective. “Technically, head to your toes,” he said, after Herbstreit said Smith’s helmet hit in the chest area. “You come in leading with the crown of the helmet, forcible contact… It’s targeting regarding where you got him.”

Of course, the play meant Georgia gained a few more yards deep in the red zone. A tough position for the Alabama defense to be in early in the first half. Not just in that specific drive but now playing without a good defensive lineman. There is always an opportunity to appeal the decision in the coming week.

But for now, everyone associated with Alabama is focused on getting a win inside Sanford Stadium. Smith can only watch from the sideline to encourage his teammates.

James Smith enjoying nice start to 2025 season for Alabama

Smith was a big-time recruit during his high school days before committing to play for Alabama. His development took some time and the Crimson Tide are beginning to see the results. It’s been a nice start to the 2025 season.

In four games played, Smith has nine tackles and three tackles for a loss to his name. Compared to 2024, when 20 total tackles were recorded and just 3.5 TFLs. Reaching those numbers in the near future is certainly possible, even with the upcoming suspension.

Looking for a positive spin, Smith provides a fresh body coming out of the halftime locker room next week. You know he will be ready to go in what is a revenge game for Alabama.
