Texas Longhorns quarterback, Arch Manning during his first practice of the spring season on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

Arch Manning made his way over to Atlanta to represent the Texas Longhorns at SEC Media Day. A little piece of family history was waiting for him. And from someone Manning claims to talk to almost every single day, his grandfather, Archie.

The one who got the Manning lineage going, Archie Manning, was an all-time great quarterback for the Ole Miss Rebels. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame after being inducted in 1989. A red Ole Miss jersey is present in Atlanta to honor his legacy.

Two generations later, Arch Manning was there to get a first-hand look. The newest member of the Manning quarterback club got the chance to pose with his grandfather’s uniform on Tuesday. An incredible moment to speak to the longstanding history of college football.

No. 18 is something Archie Manning wore, as did Uncle Peyton. That was not until his NFL career got started with the Indianapolis Colts and eventually, the Denver Broncos, though. Peyton wore No. 16 during his time on Rocky Top with the Tennessee Volunteers.

Now, Arch Manning follows in those footsteps at Texas. One day, another Manning jersey could find its way to the College Football Hall of Fame. A special year would have to take place on the 40 Acres, maybe even two.

Arch Manning speaks to relationship with grandfather

Since stepping into the spotlight, Manning has spoken extensively about his relationship with his grandfather. Most recently at SEC Media Days, he revealed a text comes through every morning with either a motivational quote or a bible verse.

The Manning Passing Academy was another outlet to dive into the topic. A few quarterbacks with the last name Manning make their way to the camp but for the most part, Archie has been there throughout Arch’s entire football career.

“We’re really close,” Manning said. “Like I said, he came over to the house all the time. Went to all my practices in high school. He texts me every single morning no matter what. So he’s just the perfect role model for me. Such a great guy and this camp kind of shows the person he is.”

Depending on how long Manning stays in Austin, we might eventually get a Texas-Ole Miss matchup. Archie Manning might have a decision to make on who he is rooting for — likely going with the grandson over his beloved Ole Miss.
