With the Big 12 set to welcome four new members in 2024 and Oklahoma and Texas to leave for the SEC, the conference schedule will look a lot different. We’ll find out exactly what model the league will use on Wednesday, when the Big 12 is expected to announced its plan for next season through 2027, according to Max Olson of The Athletic.

With the additions of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah, the conference is set to move from 14 teams up to 16 by 2024. That will put it equal to the number of teams in the SEC and just two less than the 18-team Big Ten.

The Big 12 will have to make a decision on whether to split teams into divisions for the first time since 2010. The league has been division-less since then as it remained at only 10 members from 2011-2022. It played a round robin style conference schedule during that period with each team playing one another one time across nine games.

With the addition of four teams this year to bring the league to 14, the Big 12 maintained a nine-game conference scheduling model. However, it did not bring back divisions for the 2023 season.

The SEC has already announced that it will adopt an eight-game conference schedule for 2024, so it will be interesting to see whether the Big 12 will follow suit. The ACC has also adopted an eight-game scheduling model for 2024, while the Big Ten will continue to play nine conference games a year.

Regardless, big changes are on the way for the Big 12 and college football as a whole. With the league reportedly to maintain this scheduling model all the way through 2027, we’ll have a clearer idea on what the future looks like following this announcement.

Brett Yormark on further Big 12 expansion: ‘There’s nothing imminent’

Since taking over as Big 12 commissioner, Brett Yormark has been nothing short of aggressive. He got out in front of a new media rights deal and landed his “dream scenario” by bringing in the Four Corners schools in the latest round of expansion.

One of his top priorities, though, is to enhance the conference’s standing in basketball. That’s a reason why Gonzaga has come up in realignment rumors — as recently as last week.

At Big 12 women’s basketball media day, though, Yormark said nothing is happening anytime soon.

“There’s nothing imminent,” Yormark said. “But I do explore all options that come to me. And if it creates value for membership — both short and long-term — I’m gonna pursue it even further. But right now, we love the makeup and composition of this conference. Love the Four Corners that are joining us.

“They’ve already started to integrate the four schools. They’ve been attending meetings. We’re strategizing on what next year looks like. So there’s nothing imminent with respect to expansion.”
