Big Ten Tournament Day 2: Live Updates
After an exciting day of action on Day 1, Day 2 of the Big Ten Tournament kicked off Thursday at the United Center in Chicago. Thursday’s four matchups featured some of the Big Ten’s best talent, as teams will be squaring off to face the conference’s top 4 seeds on Friday, followed by the semifinals and finals on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The day’s final game was between No. 14 Minnesota (8-20, 2-18) and No. 6 Maryland (20-11, 11-9). It was the Donta Scott show in the first half as the Maryland forward scored 16 points — more than half of the team total — to lead the Terrapins to a 31-24 halftime lead. Minnesota, running a seven-man rotation early on, shot 38.1% from the field while Maryland shot 37.9% through the first 20 minutes.
The Terrapins continued to have their way in the second half, thanks in large part to a 13-for-16 showing from the free throw line. They outscored Minnesota 39-30 after the break to seal the 70-54 victory and advance to the quarterfinals. Scott led the way with 20 points followed by Jahmir Young with 15. For Minnesota, Pharrel Payne led with 17 points.

Rutgers 62, Michigan 50
A Joey Baker thee-point basket gave Michigan a three-point lead heading into halftime, as the Wolverines led Rutgers 28-25 at the break. But a stellar second-half performance by Rutgers gave them the win, defeating Michigan 62-50. The Scarlet Knights surged, going on an 18-3 scoring run in the second half that extended their lead to double digits. The Rutgers defense gave the Wolverines’ offense problems in second half, shooting 4-21 from the field and ending the game with 14 turnovers. Dickinson had nearly half of the Wolverines points scoring 24 along with 7 rebounds, while Derek Simpson and Cam Spencer carried Rutgers offense with 13 and 18 points. Rutgers will now advance to quarterfinals, where they’ll face the top seed Purdue Boilermakers on Friday at 12:00 p.m. ET.
Ohio State 73, Iowa 69
Ohio State pulled off what’s likely to be the upset of the day at the Big Ten Tournament, knocking off Iowa, 73-69. The Buckeyes took a one-point lead into the half — a first half with nine lead changes where neither team led by more than five. The second half was much the same, with each team jockeying for more than a four or five point lead.
But eventually, it was the Buckeyes, behind freshman guards Bruce Thorton (17 points), Brice Sensabaugh (16 points) and senior wing Justice Sueing (14 points), taking a huge win. And now Ohio State can officially start to think about making a deeper run into the conference tournament.
Penn State 79, Illinois 76
The Big Ten continued to provide close-fought postseason action, with Penn State taking a slim lead into the half over Illinois, 31-30. After the Nittany Lions led by a few possession for most of the half, an 8-0 Illinois run starting with five minutes remaining in the half brought the margin to one point.
Illinois wound up taking a lead after the break and led by as many as six points in the second half. But Penn State — led by Jalen Pickett and Andrew Funk — roared back to pull off the 79-76 victory. Funk led the way with 20 points, including 17 in the second half, while Camren Wynter had 18, Seth Lundy added 17 and Pickett had 12. For the Fighting Illini, Terrence Shannon Jr. had a team-high 19 points.
