Memphis, a team with hopes of representing the Group of Five in the College Football Playoff, finds itself on upset alert Saturday afternoon. The Tigers are going up against UAB and down 10 points late in the fourth quarter. And now, if there is going to be a comeback, it might be without starting quarterback Brendon Lewis.

“Now Memphis QB Brendon Lewis just left the [game] with a leg injury and is going to the locker room,” Chris Vannini of The Athletic said via X.

Not much is going right for the Memphis offense, let alone Lewis. He leaves the game with nine completions to his name on 10 attempts. However, those are for a total of 68 yards. If there are any positives thus far, Lewis has not turned the ball over via interception.

Backup quarterback AJ Hill now takes over for the Tigers. Hill is a true freshman but one of the higher-rated players in the 2025 recruiting class. According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Hill was the No. 17 quarterback and a four-star prospect.

Memphis currently holds an undefeated 6-0 record and is ranked 22nd in the AP poll. A signature win against Arkansas put them in College Football Playoff conversations if there could be few blemishes through AAC play. Losing to UAB certainly would be one, especially after they recently made a coaching change. An important quarter and change is ahead of Memphis without its starting quarterback.

Memphis finding success with quarterback Brendon Lewis in important 2025 season

Memphis took to the NCAA transfer portal to replace program legend Seth Henigan. Lewis joined via Nevada, hoping to put together a final great season of eligibility. He spoke to what drew him to the Tigers before the season got underway.

“ Just the coaches and the production and the history of winning that they had,” Lewis said when asked why he chose Memphis via On3 | Rivals’ Tiger Sports Report. “ Coach Cramsey and his history and what he did with Seth Henigan. Since he’s been here in Memphis, really, he’s had a highly productive office and explosive offense, and he’s put up really good, really good numbers. That was just something I wanted to do for my last year. And I know Coach Cramsey had the experience and the tools to be able to help me do that.”
