BYU forward Kennard Davis arrested for alleged DUI

BYU forward Kennard Davis was arrested Thursday morning for allegedly driving under the influence, the Provo Police Department said in a press release. He was later cited for DUI charges.
Police responded to a crash at approx. 11:45 a.m. local time Thursday when officers “found reason” to arrest Davis on suspicion of DUI, per a press release obtained by KSL-TV. He was taken to the police station and later released to receive medical care for minor injuries he suffered in the crash. Additionally, Davis’ car was impounded.
Davis is in his first season at BYU after arriving from Southern Illinois. In a statement to BYU student media, the athletics department said it was “aware of the allegations and looking into the situation.”
Davis has appeared in two games for the Cougars this season, most recently in the victory over Holy Cross on Saturday. He had 12 points and two assists in 20 minutes of action as BYU came away with the resounding 98-53 victory. Davis did not play in this week’s win against Delaware.
Last year at Southern Illinois, Davis turned in a huge season in the Missouri Valley Conference. He broke out as a sophomore, averaging 16.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists across 34.1 minutes per game for the Salukis. Those numbers helped him become the No. 81 overall player and No. 17-ranked small forward to enter the transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings.

“We’d like to welcome Kennard and his family to BYU,” said BYU coach Kevin Young in a press release announcing Davis’ signing in May. “He brings a very diverse skill set to our team, and combined with his size, he gives us a lot of optionality on both ends of the floor. Kennard is a very good defender who can guard multiple positions, and he will be one of the best defenders in the Big 12.
“Offensively, we love his shooting and ability to get to the rim and free throw line. Maybe the most impressive thing about Kennard is how much he’s improved. He will fit right into our player development program. We look forward to helping him take his game to another level.”
BYU is off to a 3-0 start to the year, but a huge matchup awaits this weekend. The Cougars will take on UConn Saturday night on the big stage with a 7 p.m. ET tipoff on FOX.
