USC Trojans, Caleb Williams making the College Football Playoff in 2023? | How could they do it?

San Jose State coach Brent Brennan will see USC quarterback Caleb Williams soon enough. The two schools play one another in the season opener on August 26.

Brennan is infatuated by Williams’ talent level, but also the talent around him at USC. Lincoln Riley goes into Year 2 with the school and has Pac-12 title and College Football Playoff expectations after coming up short last season.

Brennan joined Sirius XM College Sports Radio and broke it down.

“I’ve never seen a college football player like Caleb Williams,” Brennan said. “That’s just my own opinion … I’m 27 years in, I think, and I’ve never seen anybody like him. He is just brilliant in every way. And then you add that with just the normal high level talent at USC, and then what they’ve been able to add through NIL money, right? And so I think you’re looking at a kind of football team that maybe we’ve never seen before in college football.”

En route to a Heisman Trophy last season, Williams finished with 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns, five interceptions, a 66.6% completion percentage, 382 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.

There will be playmakers all over the field, some Brennan and San Jose State are up for in the opener.

“And so that’s what I’m excited to see is just how that feels on the field,” Brennan said. “What does it look like? How do we compare how, do we match up in those, you know, play by play down by down with the USC teams? Because they’re got excellent personnel everywhere. They’re obviously very well coached. So you know, for us, it’s about playing good football.”

Caleb Williams on what’s different entering 2023

Brennan might see a very unique player in Williams, but the USC quarterback described what was different going into the fall.

Williams isn’t taking any prisoners on his path to the College Football Playoff in 2023, and he’s as poised as ever under Riley.

“Not just for myself, but for everybody overall. Most of the guys that are playing have been in the offense for a while. But confidence in the scheme and things like that,” Williams said of his team’s comfortability.

“After you get a year under your belt, you get a bunch of trials and tribulations. You get a bunch of successful plays and things like that, but [it helps build] confidence overall. Then you get to work on it during the whole summer, and that’s what we’ve been doing.”
