Georgia is off to a flying start against Texas, holding a 14-3 lead. While the headline thus far might be the play of quarterback Gunner Stockton, there is now a major injury the UGA defense is dealing with. Linebacker CJ Allen got hurt in the second quarter and eventually went back to the locker room.

Allen was not even involved in the play, engaging on a block before Texas quarterback Arch Manning attempted a pass the other way. The ESPN broadcast showed a replay and you could instantly tell something was wrong in the lower body. Moments later, they cut to Allen walking back as Laura Rutledge gave her report.

“A developing story here in Athens as Georgia star linebacker CJ Allen was injured on this play,” Rutledge said. “You see his left leg bothering him. He went into the medical tent for a little bit, tried to go back out on the field.

“Now, you can see this is happening as we speak. He is being taken to the locker room. Moments ago, he couldn’t even put that much weight on his left leg. I’ll update you guys as soon as I know more.”

Being able to separate yourself as a defensive star at Georgia can be tough to do. Allen has evolved into that role this season, becoming a top linebacker in college football. Losing him would be a big blow for the Bulldogs.

UPDATE: CJ Allen ruled ‘out for now’ by Georgia

Right as the game was coming back from halftime, Rutledge provided another update on Allen. An official designation on his status did come, although a weird one. Georgia is saying Allen is “out for now” due to the left leg injury Rutledge previously mentioned.

“The official ruling, right now, for CJ Allen, the star linebacker, is that he’s out for now with a left leg injury,” Rutledge said. “You see the injury that got CJ Allen hurt. He went into the locker room before the half. We’ll continue to see if we see him come back out here.”

Looking ahead — in case the injury to Allen bleeds into future weeks — Georgia is done with SEC play. A win against Texas would improve them to 7-1 within the conference with a shot at making it back to Atlanta. Games against Charlotte and Georgia Tech remain, the former likely not needing Allen on the field to guarantee a win.
