Clemson impressed DL Walter Mathis on his official visit: "Clemson definitely set the standard"
Clemson received the first official visit from Walter Mathis. The three-star defensive lineman out of Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day will visit Miami this weekend, Auburn on June 14 and LSU on 21 and they have a lot to live up to.
“My first official visit was great,” Mathis told On3. “Clemson definitely set the standard. Something that made this visit different was how they kept everything upfront and laid it all out on the table for me.
“Visiting coach Dabo Swinney’s house definitely was the biggest highlight for me. I was just surrounded by love and laughter the whole afternoon. Being there and getting to talking with coach Nick Eason and some of the current players definitely stood out to me.”
Coach Eason is Mathis’ lead recruiter. Clemson’s defensive line coach made Mathis feel both wanted and needed in Death Valley. He kept it real with the Peach State target all weekend.

The same can be said about coach Swinney.
“When I got time with Dabo, it was a very good experience. He made it apparent what his true intentions were with me to my family.”
Clemson is up against an ACC foe and a couple of SEC programs. Mathis is expected to make a decision before his senior season and the Tigers are in a good position.
“This visit helped them tremendously,” Mathis said. “I left the visit thinking that they were a top contender and this visit definitely puts them in my top three. Their overall message was that they want me on the team. That made me feel great knowing I’m wanted at a place of that caliber.”
