Coach K, Tyler Hansbrough highlight 2023 National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame class
Mike Krzyzewski and Tyler Hansbrough are two of the five people who will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, per a Tuesday morning announcement. The induction ceremony will take place Aug. 30 in Chicago.
Coach K, Hansbrough, Johnny Dawkins and longtime Division II head coach Herb Magee will all be part of the group going into the Hall of Fame. In addition, legendary scout Tom Konchalski will be posthumously inducted after his death in 2021.
Krzyzewski wrapped up a legendary career at Duke in 2022, ending his career as the winningest coach in college basketball history and a five-time national champion. He was a member of the 2006 Founding Class, but officially be honored with this year’s induction.
Hansbrough starred for North Carolina from 2006-09. A four-time All-American, he’s one of the most decorated Tar Heels in program history as he led the team in scoring and rebounding all four seasons, becoming the first ACC player to ever do so. The Indiana Pacers drafted him No. 13 overall in the 2009 NBA Draft and he played in the association until 2016. Following a stint with the NBA G-League, he played overseas until 2022 and has done some broadcasting work.
Hansbrough released a statement regarding his election to the Hall of Fame, expressing his gratitude to the UNC community and the staff who helped develop him into one of the all-time greates.

“I’m honored to be getting inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame,” Hansbrough said. “Choosing to play at North Carolina was one of the smartest decisions I’ve made. I had the greatest teammates at UNC and want to thank them. I also played for the best coaching staff in college basketball, and I thank Coach Williams and his staff.”
Appropriately, Dawkins — now the head coach at UCF — will be inducted along with his former coach. Dawkins played for Coach K from 1982-86, winning Naismith Player of the Year in 1986 before becoming the No. 10 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
Dawkins also released a statement on his induction.
“I’m humbled and grateful to be selected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame,” Dawkins said. “Every step of this journey has been filled with incredible teammates and mentors who have made an impact along the way. To be enshrined along Coach K and several other great players and coaches is an incredible honor as well.”
