College basketball season is now well underway, with multi-team tournaments on the near horizon and a whole lot of hoops to help sort out the wheat from the chaff. Who are the top teams in college basketball?

Well, we have a pretty good idea who the programs at the top are. Most are taking care of business at a high level against quality opponents.

There hasn’t been a ton of shake-ups in the top 10 in recent days, but there’s been plenty of movement in the top 25. So let’s take a look at where the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 has teams placed through the first four to five games of the season.

1. Purdue Boilermakers (4-0)

Purdue already has one marquee win to its name, having taken down Alabama on the road 87-80. That was enough to send the Boilermakers vaulting toward the top of the CBS Sports rankings.

Trey Kaufman-Renn is currently pacing the team with 18.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game, though he has played in only two of four games so far. Still, Purdue has four players currently averaging double-figure scoring and two in double-figure rebounding.

2. Houston Cougars (4-0)

Like Purdue, Houston has already secured a huge college basketball victory by beating Auburn. That game was at home, but it’ll still go down as a quality opportunity the Cougars, one the program managed to take full advantage of.

Through the first four games, Kingston Flemings is leading the team in scoring at 17.3 points per game. Meanwhile, forward Chris Cenac Jr. leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per game. Houston remains a tough, gritty opponent.

3. UConn Huskies (4-0)

If you’re not sensing a theme at this point, you probably should be. Each of the top three teams has a win over a ranked opponent already. For UConn, it was an 86-84 win over BYU and star recruit AJ Dybantsa.

A year removed from going back-to-back atop college basketball, Dan Hurley‘s squad appears to be picking up steam once again. Tarris Reed Jr. is averaging 20.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in three contests so far, a very versatile center. He’s been one of the most productive all-around impact players so far this season.

4. BYU Cougars (3-1)

BYU knocked off Villanova, which should be a decent quality win. Past that there isn’t a ton on the resume, but the Cougars were very competitive in the loss to the Huskies. In the absence of further results, that looks like a good thing.

All eyes are obviously on Dybantsa, who is projected as one of the top picks in the NBA Draft. He’s averaging 20.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game so far through the first four games of the season.

5. Arizona Wildcats (4-0)

Arizona came out of the gates red hot with a win over defending national champion Florida. Freshman big man Koa Peat was simply sensational in that outing. Since then, Arizona has also knocked off a ranked UCLA team.

Peat appears to be the superstar in the group, but the Wildcats have talent elsewhere, too. Big man Tobe Awaka is averaging 9.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, nearly a double-double. Better yet, the depth on the bench looks pretty good to start the year.

6. Florida Gators (3-1)

The defending college basketball national champions got a rude awakening in the season opener, when they simply couldn’t stop Peat. But since then things have looked a little better. The team still has one of the deepest frontcourts in the nation.

Where Florida has been lacking so far is perimeter defending and 3-point shooting. It took the Gators a bit to find the shooting stroke last year, too, so it’s not a huge concern yet, just an area to watch going forward.

7. Michigan Wolverines (3-0)

Michigan might not have a ranked win just yet, but wins against at TCU and against Wake Forest both feel like they’ll age pretty well. That’s two decent high-major programs, and Michigan found a way to win close games against both.

Center Aday Mara is averaging a double-double with 12.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, forward Morez Johnson is averaging 14.7 points per game to go along with 7.7 boards per outing. For now, at least, Michigan is rolling nine deep in the rotation.

8. Duke Blue Devils (5-0)

Duke has played some big-time college basketball contests already, taking on Texas in the season opener and winning by 15 and then blasting Kansas by 12 in a dominant showing early this week. The other three games the team averaged 103.0 points per game in.

Basically, Duke is winning the really tough games and blowing everyone out in the other ones. Cameron Boozer has been elite, averaging 21.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The rest of the lineup continues to develop.

9. Louisville Cardinals (4-0)

Pat Kelsey and his squad picked up a massive early season win over rival Kentucky, winning 96-88 and controlling most of the contest. Kelsey’s squad looked like the more locked in team of the two, and certainly that’s how things played out.

One thing is clear about this Louisville team: It’s going to score some points. The win against Kentucky was the only game so far this year that Louisville hasn’t topped the century mark.

10. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-1)

We’ll learn a lot more about Alabama in the next week, as a pair of ranked opponents are set to show up on the schedule. First will be a game against Illinois, followed by a game against Gonzaga.

Those two games will have a lot to do with where Alabama is ranked as the college basketball season continues. The schedule is brutal — four straight ranked games following the season opener. Alabama beat St. John’s but lost to Purdue. Can it at least split the next two against ranked foes?
