College Basketball Rankings: Coaches Poll Top 25 updated after Week 2

The USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll has been refreshed following the second week of the season. Some massive showdowns resulted in fascinating movement throughout the Top 25.

Purdue and Alabama faced off, with the Boilermakers ending up victorious on the road over the Crimson Tide. Elsewhere, UConn survived in Boston against BYU, notching a huge two-point dub against a tough Cougars squad.

With early statements already being made across the country, the Coaches Poll Top 25 is certain to see plenty of movement as the season unfolds. For now, here’s how things stack up after Week 2. This week’s updated rankings are below.

1. Purdue

Purdue is coming off a massive week, highlighted by a road win over No. 8 Alabama in Tuscaloosa and a high-scoring 97–79 victory over Akron. The Boilermakers remain undefeated at 4–0 and look every bit like a top-tier contender.

Their next test comes in the Baha Mar Championship against Memphis. Senior guard Braden Smith has been outstanding, averaging 17.8 points and 8.5 assists per game.

2. Houston

Houston rolled through Oakland with a dominant 78–45 win before edging No. 22 Auburn by one in Birmingham. The Cougars sit at 4–0 and have shown early toughness in close games and blowouts alike.

They’ll host Rider this week in what should be a tune-up opportunity. Freshman guard Kingston Flemings continues to shine, putting up 17.3 points and 5.3 assists per game.

3. UConn

UConn handled Columbia 89–62 before notching a signature win over No. 7 BYU at TD Garden. The Huskies remain perfect at 4–0 and now prepare for a huge showdown with No. 5 Arizona at home before facing Bryant.

Their balanced roster continues to impress on both ends. Senior center Tarris Reed Jr. is leading the way with 20.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

4. Duke

Duke crushed Army and Indiana State last week, scoring over 100 points in both outings as they improved to 4–0. The Blue Devils will face their toughest test yet against No. 25 Kansas at Madison Square Garden in the Champions Classic before returning home to host Niagara.

Their offense looks explosive with multiple scoring threats. Freshman star Cameron Boozer is already playing at an elite level, averaging 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists.

5. Arizona (+1)

Arizona cruised past Northern Arizona before picking up a quality win over No. 15 UCLA to reach 4–0. The Wildcats now gear up for a marquee matchup at No. 3 UConn in Storrs.

Their combination of tempo and size has given opponents problems early. Freshman forward Koa Peat has been excellent, averaging 16.3 points and 5.3 boards.

6-T. Michigan (-1)

Michigan survived overtime against Wake Forest and then went on the road to beat TCU by four to move to 3–0. The Wolverines continue to win close games and show early-season resilience.

They’ll return home to face undefeated Middle Tennessee State in Ann Arbor. Sophomore forward Morez Johnson Jr. has been steady, averaging 14.7 points and 7.7 rebounds.

6-T. Louisville (+6)

Louisville put together one of the strongest weeks in the country, beating No. 9 Kentucky by eight and dominating Ohio to move to 4–0. The Cardinals now prepare for a major early-season test on the road against undefeated Cincinnati.

Their offense continues to look sharp with strong guard play. Freshman Mikel Brown Jr. has been a breakout star, averaging 19.3 points and 6.8 rebounds.

8. Illinois (+6)

Illinois kept its perfect start rolling with a gritty four-point win over No. 11 Texas Tech before handling Colgate by 19. The Illini sit at 4–0 and continue to showcase a balanced, efficient attack on both ends of the floor.

This week brings a major spotlight game against No. 8 Alabama on Wednesday before a home matchup with Long Island on Saturday. Senior guard Kylan Boswell has been tremendous, averaging 18.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game to lead the way.

9. Florida (+1)

Florida picked up two impressive wins last week, edging rival Florida State by two before knocking off Miami by 14. The Gators have climbed to 3–1 and appear to be gaining confidence with each outing.

They’ll look to stay hot when they face Merrimack on Friday. Junior forward Thomas Haugh has emerged as their go-to option, averaging 19.0 points and 8.3 rebounds.

10. BYU (-3)

BYU handled Delaware comfortably before narrowly falling to UConn in Boston in a two-point thriller. The Cougars sit at 3–1 and look like a team capable of competing with the nation’s best.

They’ll get another major test Friday against No. 24 Wisconsin in Salt Lake City. Freshman forward AJ Dybantsa has been terrific, putting up 20.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
