Colorado DB John Slaughter plans to enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. That comes per reporting this morning by On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

“BREAKING: Colorado Safety John Slaughter is entering the @TransferPortal, he tells @On3Sports,” Fawcett posted.

Slaughter spent one season playing at safety for Colorado. That’s after transferring into the program just last offseason after beginning his collegiate career with two seasons at Tennessee.

Over his three college seasons, Slaughter has made 34 appearances for the Volunteers, with most of his action with them being on special teams, and the Buffaloes, as he has posted 31 total tackles, three interceptions, and one forced fumble. That includes 11 games, three of those being starts late in the season, at safety this fall for Colorado, where he posted 25 total tackles, two of his interceptions, and that forced fumble.

A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Slaughter played his high school football at Southaven. He was a Top-600 overall recruit there as a three-star in the 2023 recruiting cycle. He also rated as a Top-60 safety in the class and as the No. 11 player that year out of the state of Mississippi. That’s according to Rivals’ Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Departures like this have come to be expected at Colorado. That’s based on the fact that few programs, if any, have had more roster turnover by way of the NCAA Transfer Portal than the Buffaloes have had going into a fourth offseason under Deion Sanders. That has continued to this point of this year’s cycle so far, with double-digit names already planning to be in from this past season’s roster at Colorado.

Slaughter took advantage of his newfound opportunity on a defense this year in Boulder. He’ll now be back in the portal, in deciding to spend what’s remaining of his college eligibility elsewhere, with his intention being to be in once the one-time, two-week window opens on January 2nd.
