Damian Lillard accepts role as general manager of Weber State men's basketball program

Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard has accepted a role with his alma mater Weber State as general manager for the men’s basketball program. The university announced his hiring Saturday.
Lillard is the latest active player in U.S. major professional sports to accept an administrative job with an NCAA team. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry took over as Davidson basketball’s assistant general manager in March, and Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young is an assistant general manager at Oklahoma.
The nine-time NBA All Star’s career began at Weber State, where he played from 2008-12. While in college, Lillard was named the Big Sky Player of the Year twice and earned First Team All-Big Sky honors three times. He was also named a Third Team All-American as a senior in 2012 and has his No. 1 jersey number retired by the university.
“Success doesn’t come overnight, especially in today’s ever-changing basketball landscape,” Lillard said in a press release. “College athletics is constantly evolving, and building a strong program requires time, trust, and commitment. I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State.”
“The support of our community is vital to the program’s success, and I am committed to playing a greater role in that effort. This opportunity allows me to be even more involved in shaping the future of Weber State basketball.”
Per the university, Lillard will work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership to provide insight, mentorship, and guidance, using his experience at the collegiate and professional levels to elevate the program.

Lillard’s illustrious basketball career began at Weber State
“From his days as a Wildcat to his success as a professional, Damian Lillard has remained deeply connected to Weber State, leaving an enduring mark on our university,” said Tim Crompton, Weber State‘s Director of Athletics, via the press release.
“This new role allows him to contribute his vision and experience in a more formal way, further elevating our program. His support provides Coach [Eric] Duft and the program a tremendous advantage as we continue building for the future. Damian’s dedication to Weber State is stronger than ever, further cementing his lasting impact on our community.”
Lillard is one of 18 Weber State alums to ever reach the NBA, but is easily the most illustrious former Wildcat. He was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, which recognized the 75 greatest players in the history of the National Basketball Association.
The Oakland native was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the No. 6 overall pick in 2012, where would spend the next 11 seasons. Lillard joined the Milwaukee Bucks from 2023-25, but resigned with Portland this offseason.
