A ton of eyes were on the Miami Hurricanes in the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings. Given they do not have another game this season, where Miami fell on Tuesday was critical for their fate. Alas, the committee placed them at No. 12, meaning no movement for the time being.

Miami has gained plenty of supporters through this process, mainly when it comes to their ranking relative to Notre Dame. Danny Kanell is one of them, speaking on the latest rankings on social media. He says the Hurricanes “got screwed” and believes the whole system is “a sham.”

“I’ve been telling you guys this whole thing is a sham….you finally get it now right??” Kanell said via X. “Miami got screwed. Welcome to the club!”

The main frustration surrounding Miami is continually ranked behind Notre Dame despite winning the head-to-head matchup. If the College Football Playoff were to begin today, the Irish would be in the 12-team field, while the Hurricanes would not. The two have an identical record of 10-2 and close metrics, while not playing in a conference championship game.

As for the “welcome to the club” portion of Kanell’s second tweet, you can only assume he is alluding to his favorite team, the Florida State Seminoles. The most infamous decision a CFP committee has ever made, Florida State got left out of the 2023 four-team field despite going undefeated and winning the ACC title game. Instead, a one-loss Alabama controversially got in.

If Miami does find itself on the outside looking in, Kanell believes the two programs can share some frustration. Still, not a spot either one of them wants to be in. You have to imagine Kanell will not be the only one to express some frustrations at some point moving forward.

Some potential hope for Miami after Tuesday’s CFP rankings

Maybe there is still a little bit of hope remaining for Miami. Committee chair Hunter Yurachek was asked about idle teams potentially seeing their rankings move on Sunday. He kept the possibility open, meaning in a world where Miami and Notre Dame are right next to each other, the head-to-head finally comes into play.

“Teams that are idle can move up or down,” Yurachek said. ” … “Each of the championship games will just give us another game and another data point to evaluate the teams that participated in those championship games and the idle teams around them.”
