Danny Kanell mocks Notre Dame vs. Miami College Football Playoff debate, backs Hurricanes

Another data point in the debate between Miami and Notre Dame for a potential spot in the College Football Playoff presented itself on Saturday. Pitt is now a common opponent for the two, as the Panthers faced them in a three-week stretch. Both resulted in losses for Pat Narduzzi‘s squad, not being relatively close.

Still, this opened the door for Danny Kanell to have some fun with the situation. He went to bat for Miami by joking about the game’s conditions and Pitt’s mindset heading into the game.

One thing still remains at the top of his mind, though. Kanell is not going to let down the head-to-head argument.

“Okay so now we have one quality common opponent between ND and Miami in Pitt,” Kanell said via X. “Miami was better in worse conditions vs Pitt actually trying to win the game. But this is stupid. Because instead of that we could just use the actual game when they played each other. Miami > ND.”

This debate began when the initial College Football Playoff rankings were released. Notre Dame started its journey at No. 10, eight spots ahead of Miami, which was No. 18. Mario Cristobal has since gotten his team into a better position at No. 12 but Notre Dame moved up a spot.

For somebody like Kanell, there is not much of a conversation to be had. He believes the matchup that took place in Week 1 should put Miami over the top. Especially since, as of right now, they are on the outside looking in.

More on CFP situation between Miami, Notre Dame

Notre Dame has yet to play its season finale. The annual rivalry game against Stanford is set to take place at 10:30 p.m. ET. If the Irish walk out with a big-time win, the debate between them and Miami will only continue on.

We might have a final answer on Tuesday night as well. Notre Dame will not play another game before the College Football Playoff is set to begin and Miami is highly unlikely to either. While there are some things to figure out in the ACC, the Hurricanes do not figure to be in the mix.

In a year where the spots for at-large bids are going to be an incredibly tight race, every decision from the committee matters. And none right now is viewed more controversially than Notre Dame over Miami.
