Memphis, Tennessee – The all-star season is wrapping up with the Iverson Classic. Many of the nation’s top seniors are suiting up for the last time, behind closed doors with NBA scouts lining the baseline. On3 was on site, and here are the storylines from Day 1 of the Iverson Classic practice session.

Is Cason Wallace the top Point Guard in 2022?

The rise of Cason Wallace has been a fun one to watch. Last year, there was conversation surrounding whether or not he was a top-25 player. He answered those questions as he is firmly now in the top five. How did he answer those questions? He has shown that he is in the conversation as the best point guard in the class.

Wallace has always been a top-notch perimeter defender. He is quick-twitch, with long arms and competitive fire. However, he has continued to prove his chops on the ball. Wallace touches the paint with great pace, he is excellent in the pick and roll, and he does not turn the ball over. In this setting, today, he shot the lights out. His form looks good, and his release is soft and repetitive. On this day, at the Iverson Classic, Cason Wallace was the best player in the gym.

Expect the Richardson (TX) High player to be the top point guard in 2022 when rankings are updated next week. Richardson has signed with Kentucky.

Could Anthony Black get his fifth star?

Since last summer, Anthony Black has risen from outside the top 100 to a consensus top-25 player. The frame is intriguing; at 6-foot-5 with long arms, he is built like a wide receiver – interestingly enough, he had over ten D1 football offers before focusing solely on basketball. The Arkansas commitment’s father, Terry Black, averaged 15.4 points and 8.4 rebounds in his final year at Baylor. The athletic genes are there.

Black missed most of this season with Duncanville (TX) High, so it was hard to get a good read on him. His consistent performances in the practice sessions of these post-season all-star events have been enough to bump him up the rankings. At this time next week, look for a fifth star to be by his name. Some NBA personnel talked about Black as the best NBA prospect in the event.

DJ Jefferson should be a high major commodity

DJ Jefferson is a known player out of Minneapolis (MN) Minnesota Prep. The lefty shooting guard has a smooth floor game with range and confidence from all three levels.

He recently de-committed from Tulsa and has said schools like Washington State, Texas, and Wichita State. Jefferson is currently unranked by On3, but if he continues to play as he has so far, look for him to make a significant entry into the top 100.

Jefferson is an uncommitted senior.

Tarris Reed continues to produce

Tarris Reed has been a top-100 type prospect for a while. However, his ranking jumped significantly when he reshaped his body at Branson (MO) Link Prep this season. Reed is a strong, sturdily built post player. He is a tough area rebounder, sets excellent screens, and has soft, passer-friendly hands. Reed can pick and pop out to three, and Reed can create from the high post. The question with him, long term, will be where does he defend.

However, that will not be a question at Michigan. Reed’s skill-set should cause problems almost immediately in Ann Arbor. There is no doubt about his talent transitioning into the Big 10, but his continued production is opening eyes to what he could be in the NBA.

Reed has signed with Michigan.
