Ed Orgeron interested in coaching return after four-year retirement

Ed Orgeron left LSU at the end of the 2021 season, and he hasn’t been on the sidelines since. However, the national title-winning coach is looking to get back into the swing of things after a couple of years off.
The former Tigers leader joined Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take to dish on his yearning to return to the sport. While he hasn’t totally committed just yet, he’s getting the itch to be on the sidelines again, so it could happen in short order.
“I think it’s time,” Orgeron stated, regarding getting back into coaching football. “I’m feeling it a little bit. Haven’t made the decision totally, but I’ve got my boys settled, coaching football now. It’s been four years since I’ve been out. I’m getting the itch again.”
Orgeron would be a fascinating hire for any team in college football. Whether there’s much interest in the head coach after a tough finish to his tenure in Baton Rouge and multiple seasons removed from the sidelines remains to be seen though.
One thing that Orgeron would bring is the experience of bringing a national title home. Not just any national title either — a dominant, undefeated national title-winning season. However, Orgeron won’t be able to bring Joe Burrow with him. There’s always a bit of a caveat when it comes to the head coach.

All in all, Orgeron has amassed a 67–47 record as a head coach, over the course of his time with LSU, Ole Miss and the interim leader of USC back in 2013. The moments he spent roaming the sidelines with the Tigers is certainly more memorable than anything else.
Moving forward, college football is an obvious fit for Orgeron, but he does have some NFL experience, as well. He was the defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints back in 2008. Whether he is hellbent on being a head coach or willing to take a position as an assistant is the question many will be asking now.
There’s some obvious candidates in the SEC, and across college football as a whole, as it pertains to potential openings over the next couple of months. Orgeron wouldn’t be a hard sell to fans and boosters alike, although the landscape of the sport has changed a bit since he left it in 2021.
Time will tell what Ed Orgeron does, and where he pops up next. He’s throwing his fishing pole in the water and looking to see if anyone bites. The 64-year-old is ready to return, but whether a team will have him is the more interesting side of the equation.
