UCF QB commit EJ Colson reclassifies to 2024 cycle
Byron (Ga.) Cedar Grove three-star quarterback and UCF commit EJ Colson has reclassified to the 2024 cycle, he announced on Thursday.
The 6-foot, 195-pounder has been committed to the Golden Knights since July 6 and will now head to Orlando a year early. Colson will sign during the December period next week.
Upon his reclassification, Colson now ranks as the No. 414 overall prospect and No. 25 QB in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
“God led me here,” Colson told On3 upon his commitment to UCF. “I kept praying on it, and he showed me this was the way…The feeling I got every time I stepped on campus (won me over). It was really genuine love and support.”
The likes of Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee all had Colson on campus at one point throughout his recruitment, but the signal-caller relished the feeling he had with Gus Malzahn and the UCF coaching staff.
“Coach (Darin) Hinshaw made it clear every time we spoke and when I met with coach (Gus) Malzahn, He looked at me and said that I was the future of this program,” Colson said. “Hearing someone of his caliber say that was amazing.”
It was a camp in June that laid the seeds for Colson’s eventual commitment. He’ll now look to help the Knights usher in a new era of football in the Big 12 upon his arrival.
“Once my family fell in love with it like I did (I knew),” Colson said. “I took my grandparents and parents with me when I camped in June and the way everything was laid out with my visit. The way coach Hinshaw broke down the game was amazing to see. I feel like he’s the best in college football right now. So why not get coached by the best?”
“I think we can accomplish everything we set our minds towards,” he added. “We want to make a statement not only in the BIG12 but also in the country. We want to be the best team in the country. And we are going to work hard every single day with the mindset of being champions.”
