ESPN's College GameDay reveals Patrick Mahomes as guest picker for BYU at Texas Tech

‘College GameDay’ will be coming to Lubbock on Saturday morning, with a Top 10 matchup set to be played of No. 7 BYU vs. No. 8 Texas Tech out of the Big 12. With that, an all-time name for the Red Raiders will be in town as the Celebrity Guest Picker this week.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been announced as this weekend’s guest picker. He’ll be back at his alma mater for the Top 10 game in conference play, being hosted inside Jones AT&T Stadium.
“Come on now, you know @PatrickMahomes had to come back to Lubbock to be this weekend’s guest picker,” the show’s social media accounts shared on Friday morning.
Mahomes was an obvious selection, being one of the all-time best quarterbacks in school history at Texas Tech before making his case as one of the best ever to play the sport through his ninth season so far. He has won a pair of MVP awards, with three more as Super Bowl MVP with the Chiefs in the NFL. He left the Red Raiders among the top three passers for the program, posting 63.5% completion for 11,252 yards, averaging a school record of 351.6 yards per game, with 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions, in his collegiate career from 2014 to 2016.
It also doesn’t hurt that the Chiefs (5-4) are on a bye this week. Coming off a 28-21 loss at Buffalo in Week 9, Kansas City is off in Week 10 before returning for a divisional matchup against the Denver Broncos in Week 11.

This is the tenth guest picker of the season for ESPN’s College GameDay, with Week 1 not having one as part of the final episode of Lee Corso in Columbus. Trae Young (Norman – 5-3), Candace Parker (Knoxville – 1-6), Matthew Tkachuk (Miami – 4-2), Lavar Arrington (University Park – 5-5), Theo Von (Tuscaloosa – 4-3), Sabrina Ionescu (Eugene – 7-3), Jelly Roll (Athens – 6-2), Nate Bargatze (Nashville – 6-2), and Alex Smith (Salt Lake City – 5-3) have all come on the desk this season so far. Seven of the nine have a winning record in pick games this season, led by a span from Week 7 to Week 9 when Ionescu, Jelly Roll, and Bargatze posted the best marks of the season.
This will then be just the second time ever that GameDay will be on site in Lubbock, having last been there on November 1, 2008, for a top six matchup against No. 1 Texas, which No. 6 Texas Tech miraculously won at 39-33 on a go-ahead touchdown by Michael Crabtree. This second trip by the show, hosted for the first two hours on the west side of the stadium before moving inside for the final hour ahead of the early afternoon kickoff, will then be for a game that’s very important as well, with the Cougars and Red Raiders playing for contention for both the Big 12 Championship and for the College Football Playoff.
Beyond just his name, Mahomes has remained one of the biggest ambassadors of Texas Tech. He’ll be one again tomorrow morning on a major stage, for their school and their football program, when he sits at the desk on ‘College GameDay.’
