Even with expanded national recruiting, Texas products make up the bulk of the 2025 Longhorns

In a different era of college football, successful recruiting for the Texas Longhorns meant taking most if not all of the top players that hailed from the Lone Star State. Top classes from the Mack Brown era were built by dominant performances in all regions of the state, whether that was the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, the Greater Houston area, or from other big cities or talented regions.

Landing the best players that live within driving distance of the 40 Acres is always going to be important, but sometimes the best options at a certain position need to hop on a plane to get to Austin. Sometimes, the best players at a certain position in Texas may not be up to any number of standards Steve Sarkisian and company require from their players. This leads them to look outside the state lines, something Sarkisian has done with great effect over the last four years.

Even so, Texas is a high school football talent hotbed and the Longhorns will always draw the bulk of its roster from the Lone Star State. That’s reflected in the 2025 Longhorns, which boast 49 of 84 scholarship players from the state of Texas.

The Metroplex is represented with 23 players. Houston follows with 10. The Austin area has six players on the current roster. Central Texas and the East Texas each boast three. San Antonio and the Golden Triangle each have two representatives on the current roster. This includes transfer portal additions.

Thirty-five players come from outside the Lone Star State. California is the state with the most non-Texan players, boasting eight. Next is Louisiana with six followed by Florida with five and Georgia with four. Eleven other players come from all over the country, with Missouri, Arizona, Alabama, Hawaii, North Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey represented.

Texas even has an international player in the form of Jack Bouwmeester. Hero Kanu is included in California’s total considering he played prep ball for Santa Margarita Catholic, but Kanu originally hails from Germany.

Offers have been sent out to prospects in the 2026 class to players from over 20 states, including scholarships sent to places not typically recruited by the Longhorns like Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Texas boasts 2026 commitments from four Texans, a Louisianan, and a Floridian, and hopes to draw from other talent rich states like California and Georgia.

Members of the Inside Texas staff have predictions in favor of Texas for the Longhorns to land 2026 prospects from North Carolina, California, and, of course, Texas.

The Longhorns will always draw the bulk of their talent from the Lone Star State. But as the roster composition shows, they won’t be limited by borders with New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, nor by their international border with Mexico.
