Former Ohio State wide receiver Kyion Grayes is expected to commit to Cal out of the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos has confirmed. Grayes is heading back to the West Coast but will continue his college career with the Golden Bears in the ACC.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports was first to report.

The last action Grayes saw came during the 2022 season as a true freshman. Two appearances resulted in one reception for two yards as he decided to take a redshirt. However, the wide receiver did not receive any playing time during the 2023 season.

Grayes is expected to have three years of eligibility remaining.

There might not be a better recruiter in the country than Brian Hartline, seemingly getting his top guys on an annual basis. Grayes was a nice win when he was a recruit but after two years, there was no growth in the depth chart. Deciding to move on for better playing time might work out for both sides.

Cal will be getting a player with a lot of potential based on his recruiting ranking.

Grayes played high school football at Chandler (AZ) High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 104 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Cal putting heavy emphasis on wide receiver in NCAA transfer portal

A ton of players are entering the Cal program this offseason, hoping to make the transition from the Pac-12 to the ACC a smooth one. Head coach Justin Wilcox has put a huge emphasis on wide receivers though, with Grayes being the position’s fifth addition.

Cole Boscia, Jonathan Brady, Mikey Matthews, and Tobias Merriweather will also be new pass catchers for the Golden Bears. All but one (Brady) previously played for a Power Five program but Grayes was the highest-rated recruit of the bunch.

Last year’s leading receiver for the Golden Bears was Jeremiah Hunter with 731 yards and 11 touchdowns on 63 receptions. He entered the NCAA transfer portal himself and will be playing for the Washington Huskies in 2024.

Replacing Hunter will not be an easy task but plenty of options are expected to be on campus.
