College football expert Greg McElroy has broken down the 2023 college football schedule, looking for the best games of each weekend. As the season hits full swing, Week 6, McElroy has deemed the Oklahoma Sooners versus the Texas Longhorns, also known as The Red River Showdown, the ultimate game for that week.

“It’s the Red River rivalry shootout showdown, whatever you want to call it. That game, to me, is must-see entertainment,” said McElroy. “In week 6, if you think I’m going anywhere other than the Cotton Bowl there in Dallas in the midst of the State Fair, you’re lying to yourself. That will be an incredible setup.”

Last year, when these two teams faced off, Texas delivered the worst beating in the rivalries’ history to Oklahoma. The Longhorns crushed the Sooners 49-0 thanks to quarterback Quinn Ewers‘ 21-31, 289 yards, and four touchdown passing performance.

And it didn’t hurt for Texas that Oklahoma’s starting quarterback Dillion Gabriel was out injured for the contest. But this year, things look to be much different as both teams have improved from last season.

“You look at both teams’ resumes up to that point. Oklahoma will be in a prime position roster, and the resume should look pretty good at that point. Texas, if they can shock the world and beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, they’re likely to be undefeated at this point,” said McElroy. “This very much could be involving two teams that are ranked in the top 12, top 15 at the very worst. So it’ll be very interesting to see this matchup. And it could be the first of two matchups we get from Oklahoma and Texas there in the Big 12. I think both teams both rosters are significantly improved (and) I think both teams have a real chance to get to the Big 12 championship at season’s end.

“I love Week 6 going to the Cotton Bowl; love being in that venue that’s split 50/50 with the hatred and animosity on both sides of the 50. It’s a great scene (and) It’s a great spot. It’s definitely gonna be a must-see during our college football road trip.”

There were a few games that came close to topping The Red River Showdown, as McElroy also explained. But the one that came in a close second was Alabama’s trip to College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies.

And the college football expert also made a case as to why that contest will be great to watch, just not ultimate.

“A couple tough ones here. Alabama at Texas A&M was on the shortlist. We know that there’s no love lost in this game. Alabama lost to Texas A&M two years ago. Last year it came down to the wire. And I happen to believe… the Aggies bounce back this year. Last year was an anomaly. They were extremely young, had some injury issues. I think they bounce back and bounce back in a big way here in 2023. This will be one of, if not the toughest, road environments for Alabama.”
