For the first time since 1940, Texas heads to Gainesville to face off against Florida. The Longhorns were members of the Southwest Conference back then but now come to town for an SEC showdown. Additionally, it’s just the fifth-ever game between two of college football’s most iconic programs.

There is some excitement surrounding this one as well. Texas is playing in its SEC opener, fresh off a bye week. Meanwhile, Florida desperately needs to get back on the right track under head coach Billy Napier after two weeks of conversation surrounding his job. For different reasons, walking out a winner is important for both teams.

Unfortunately, some injuries are prevalent leading into Saturday. The initial injury report was released on Wednesday, giving us an idea of how things will look before the 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. You can check out the full report here.

More on Texas traveling to Florida for SEC showdown

During the SEC Coaches Teleconference, Steve Sarkisian described the first four games for Texas as the “preseason.” While the Longhorns did not come out undefeated, all four nonconference games took place to clear the path for SEC play. Add in a week off and it’s easy to see why folks in Austin believe this season is just now getting underway.

A lot of eyes will be on Arch Manning as he goes up against another power conference opponent. Struggles against Ohio State were well-documented before going a step forward due to a poor performance vs. UTEP. Everyone is itching to see if Manning has grown since then. The Florida defense is nothing to shrug your shoulders at, either.

It’s the Florida offense where the concerns mainly lie for Napier. DJ Lagway is another quarterback who endured early-season struggles. Napier continues to keep himself in the role of primary play-caller, hoping the duo works out in the near future.

Either way, somebody is getting their first SEC victory of the season. Texas is kicking off an important two-week stretch, heading to Dallas for the Red River Shootout after this one. Florida dropped its conference opener in Baton Rouge on Sept. 13 and is now in the third game of a four-game stretch vs. top-10 ranked teams.
