Jam Miller, Jermod McCoy injury update: Wednesday availability report reveals latest on Alabama, Tennessee stars

It’s officially the Third Saturday in October and with it comes the renewal of the highly-contentious Alabama–Tennessee rivalry series that dates back to 1901. Following last year’s loss in Knoxville, second-year Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer is still seeking his first victory cigar in the rivalry, while Vols head coach Josh Heupel is vying to secure Tennessee’s first two-game win streak in the series in 20 years.
No. 6 Alabama (5-1, 3-0 SEC) is currently an 8.5-point home favorite over visiting No. 11 Tennessee (5-1, 2-1 SEC), with an over-under point total of 58.5 points, according to BetMGM. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm ET on ABC from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
The Vols have won two of the last three in the rivalry series, including last year’s 24-17 win in Knoxville, but haven’t claimed victory in Tuscaloosa since 2003. Prior to Tennessee’s 2023 win at home, the Crimson Tide dominated the Third Saturday in October series with 15 consecutive victories dating back to 2007.
Beginning on Wednesday of each week, the SEC releases daily availability reports for its intra-conference games. The final report will be revealed 90 minutes before the game’s kickoff on Saturdays.

After a surprise appearance on last week’s injury report and failing to record a catch in last weekend’s 27-24 win at Missouri, all eyes will be on the status of superstar Alabama receiver Ryan Williams ahead of this week’s Third Saturday in October rivalry game vs. Tennessee.
DeBoer attributed Williams’ inclusion on last week’s availability report to a hit he received the week prior versus Vanderbilt, adding it “hobbled” him against Mizzou but that “he’s not that far away.”
Two more Crimson Tide playmakers — senior running back Jam Miller and freshman receiver Derek Meadows — are both working their way through the concussion protocol this week after both left last week’s game at Missouri. DeBoer revealed Meadows “will be out” this week after taking a monstrous hit to the helmet early last Saturday, and was only slightly more confident about Miller’s status this week.
“Yeah, I expected Derek will be out,” DeBoer said Wednesday during his weekly appearance on the SEC Coaches Teleconference. “But I think Jam’s in probably what we’ll put will be a questionable state for the weekend when it comes to the report tonight. That’s kind of where I see it at right now.”

Meanwhile, the status of star Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy (ACL) remains in limbo as the projected first-round NFL Draft pick is still working his way back from offseason ACL surgery. McCoy hasn’t played yet this season and remains limited in practice while restricted to individual drills.
At the same time, the Vols expect both sophomore running back DeSean Bishop and freshman receiver Braylon Staley to return to action this week after suffering injuries in the second half of last Saturday’s 34-31 win over Arkansas.
