Joel Klatt picks South Florida over Tulane in American Conference Championship

The race for the Group of Five bid in the College Football Playoff is coming down to the wire.
Multiple teams from the American Conference, including Memphis, South Florida, Tulane, North Texas and Navy are still in contention for the final spot in the CFP. It will mark the first ever appearance in the Playoff for one of these four programs, as Boise State earned the first ever GO5 bid last season.
As the regular season winds down, FOX Sports‘ Joel Klatt gave his prediction for the American Conference Championship Game. Klatt forsees South Florida and Tulane clashing in the game, with the Bulls winning and earning a trip to the CFP.
“I think, even with the loss to Memphis, that South Florida has a good chance to get back into that Championship game,” Klatt said on the latest edition of ‘The Joel Klatt Show‘. “If they’re able to do that, I think they’re able to win that game. I don’t see Navy making it through their November, because they’ve been fortunate enough to this point to be unbeaten. So, I’m gonna go away from Navy.”
“I can see Memphis possibly losing to a Tulane team that is really good. That would put South Florida in the American Championship against Tulane. I think if South Florida were to win that game, they would get the automatic bid from the Group of Five.”

Six teams remain in contention for American Championship
USF could have put Memphis in the dirt for good this season on Saturday, but it blew a fourth quarter 31-17 lead and fell to the Tigers 34-31. Heading into Week 10 of the season, Navy currently sits atop the American Conference standings with an unblemished 7-0 (5-0) record. The Midshipmen however will clash with North Texas, South Florida and Memphis over the coming weeks.
Tulane is the other unblemished team in the American, sitting at 6-1 (3-0). With just one game against a top tier team in the conference (Memphis) over its final five games, the Green Wave look to be in good shape to make the title game for the third consecutive season (lost prior two appearances). Behind them sit four American teams at 3-1 (Memphis, USF, North Texas and Temple).
The American Conference has been one of the most competitive conferences in all of college football this season and it will surely come down to the wire for that coveted final spot in the CFP.
