Jon Sumrall erupts on sideline after no-call during American championship vs. North Texas
As Tulane looked to get a big play in the second quarter of the American Championship against North Texas, Jake Retzlaff’s pass fell incomplete. However, Jon Sumrall thought there should have been pass interference – and he let the officials hear it.
Sumrall erupted on the sideline after the no-call and had to be held back by his assistants. The broadcast captured the moments as the Tulane head coach looked for a flag to be thrown.
Ultimately, play continued, and Tulane’s drive ended with a field goal. That put the Green Wave ahead 17-7 in the second quarter of the title game.
Friday’s American title game, hosted by Tulane, presents an interesting coaching matchup. Sumrall is preparing to take over as the head coach at Florida while North Texas head coach Eric Morris was announced as the next head coach at Oklahoma State. Both coaches are finishing their seasons with their respective programs, and the winner of Friday’s game is likely heading to the College Football Playoff.
Jon Sumrall said finishing the season out with Tulane was important as he became a central part of the college football coaching carousel. Both programs agreed to let him continue, and the Green Wave’s postseason journey begins with Friday’s American title game.

“As the Florida opportunity became more of a reality for me, I voiced to them how important it was for me to finish this job the right way,” Sumrall said during his introductory press conference at Florida. “How you enter a place matters, but how you leave a place maybe matters just as much, if not more. And Tulane has given me a tremendous opportunity to be the head football coach here, and it’s been very special for me and my family.
“I wanted to coach this out. I wanted to be a part of this conference championship game this week, and hopefully something after that if we can handle our business. Florida was great about understanding that. Very, very grateful for Tulane understanding that. And our players have been awesome through this whole process, man. We’ve got a great group of guys on this team, and, man, they’re so fun to be around every day. And, this is a player-driven program, so our guys have been great every step of the way.”
Tulane checked in at No. 20 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings and North Texas was at No. 24. That all but assures the winner of Friday’s American Championship heads to the CFP.
