Michigan running back Jordan Marshall was considered “unlikely” to return to The Game against Ohio State, according to the FOX broadcast. He left in the first quarter after appearing to aggravate a shoulder injury. However, he returned in the third quarter amid a 24-9 deficit.

Marshall’s status was up in the air entering Saturday’s rivalry matchup after he injured his shoulder against Northwestern. However, he said he was “100%” against Ohio State despite missing the Maryland game out of precaution, though he was available in an “emergency” situation.

Marshall got off to a strong start against Ohio State with four carries for 61 yards. But he left the game favoring his right arm and did not return, though he was on the sidelines with his helmet on. It appeared he will not come back at all as Michigan looks to extend its winning streak against the Buckeyes.

“Jordan Marshall, who has been out since early in the first quarter, re-aggravated that shoulder injury,” FOX’s Tom Rinaldi reported after halftime. “Unlikely that he’s going to return and play a factor here. A big loss for Michigan.”

Marshall took over as Michigan’s lead back after Justice Haynes’ injury, which kept the Alabama transfer out the last few games. He headed into Saturday with a team-high 143 carries for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also adding eight receptions for 82 yards in the passing game.

Although Marshall missed Michigan’s victory over Maryland, Sherrone Moore said he could have played in a pinch. When he asked the sophomore running back about whether he’d be good to go against Ohio State, he didn’t even hesitate.

“Jordan could have went if we needed him to,” Moore said. “I talked to him after this, I was like, ‘I guess you’re not gonna play next week.’ And he just laughed at me. He says, ‘Is that really a question?’ No, he could’ve went.”

Despite Marshall’s departure, Michigan still leaned heavily into the running game in the first half against Ohio State. The Wolverines got 108 of their 124 yards on the ground through the first two quarters, with Bryson Kuzdzal seizing the role as lead back. He had a team-high 10 carries for 38 yards at halftime.

Saturday’s installment of “The Game” has plenty at stake for both teams. Ohio State can clinch a spot in the Big Ten Championship with a victory, while Michigan can not only get a fifth straight win over the Buckeyes, but punch its ticket by doing so – though the Wolverines would need some help.
