ESPN’s Greg McElroy went through a fun exercise during Big 12 Media Days. He asked quarterbacks who they would enjoy playing on the road at some point in their college careers. Everyone had something different for various reasons but TCU fans might agree with Josh Hoover.

He decided to go with the Texas Longhorns, a game that picked up steam once TCU joined the Big 12. Now in the SEC, we no longer get to see Texas and TCU play anymore. But if Hoover had his way, the Horned Frogs would make their way down to Austin in the near future.

“I feel like we’ve always had — last couple years of the Big 12, they just got out of the conference — but there was a rivalry there,” Hoover said. “Playing on the road at Texas is a big one. And that’s where I would want to play.”

Hoover signed with TCU back in 2022, actually getting to experience a couple of the matchups. He took the field as Sonny Dykes‘ starting quarterback for the 2023 game, one where Texas left Fort Worth with a three-point win. Throwing for over 300 yards and adding two touchdowns was a nice individual performance for Hoover, even if an interception is on the stat sheet as well.

Moving back one season — Hoover was on the sideline to watch TCU earn a win in the state capital. ESPN College GameDay was there for the occasion, highlighting the great run they were on. One that eventually earned a spot in the College Football Playoff and national championship game.

And if TCU is going to play Texas at any point in Hoover’s career, another dream campaign will be needed. There are no scheduled meetings between the two in-state programs. If we are getting specific, as Hoover was, and saying the game needs to take place in Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, a College Football Playoff first-round contest would need to occur.

The journey for Hoover to get there will begin on Sept. 1. TCU travels to Chapel Hill for a fascinating nonconference showdown against Bill Belichick and North Carolina. Two weeks later is TCU’s main rivalry game against SMU before getting into a grueling nine-game Big 12 slate.

If Hoover can find a way to stack some wins up, his dreams might become a reality. As usual in the Big 12, almost anyone would wind up earning the conference’s automatic bid.
