Matt Rhule says Panthers effort 'wasn't good enough,' addresses possible QB change from Baker Mayfield

Through four weeks of the NFL season, the Carolina Panthers are just 1-3. In that time, they’ve struggled offensively. Meanwhile, head coach Matt Rhule has seen his record at the NFL level fall to just 11-26.

Following Carolina’s most recent loss to Arizona, Matt Rhule said he doesn’t know why the team isn’t playing at a higher level. However, he doesn’t think that the team’s effort has been up to standard.

“It just wasn’t good enough,” Matt Rhule said. “Offensively, I think we have to go back and look at everything and see what we can do better, see what we’re doing well, and try to fix what ails us right now, because it took a toll on us tonight.”

Later in the press conference, Matt Rhule was asked if he would consider benching starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. So far this season, Mayfield has struggled, throwing only four touchdowns to three interceptions.

“I’m going to refrain from anything big picture until tomorrow. At the end of the day, I’m on the headset, I see the things, I know that it’s never just one person here, one person there, it’s a lot of different things, so I’ll try to give you a really well thought-out answer after watching tapes. All that being said, I believe that we can play better than that. I just feel like we have to expect more from all of us as an offense, and it starts with me first.”

One problem for Matt Rhule, if he does want to make a change at quarterback, is that the team has been riddled with injuries at the position. Rookie Matt Corral is out for the season with a Lisfranc injury. Meanwhile, last season’s starting quarterback Sam Darnold is currently on injured reserve. He’s currently ‘not close’ to returning from that injury.

“Offensively, we have to score more points…So yeah, we have to get it corrected, but in terms of any one person I just don’t think it’s right to speak on it right now,” Matt Rhule said.
