Minnesota fans storm field after defeating No. 25 Nebraska

Minnesota fans stormed the field after the Golden Gophers defeated No. 25 Nebraska in convincing 24-6 fashion on Friday. It’s Minnesota’s first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Minnesota’s last win at home against a ranked opponent was on Oct. 5, 2024, when it defeated No. 11 USC. With the victory on Friday, the Golden Gophers improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in Big Ten play.
Minnesota’s defense was spectacular in the win, holding Nebraska to 213 total yards of offense. The Golden Gophers relentlessly pressured Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola. They finished the game with nine sacks and 10 tackles for loss.
Nebraska’s lack of pass protection isn’t new. Entering the game against Minnesota, the Cornhuskers had allowed 16 sacks this season. Earlier this week, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule addressed his team’s struggle to keep opponents out of their backfield.
“Are we giving up too many sacks? Yes. That’s what I love about Dylan Raiola,” Rhule said. “On one of them, he said that’s on me, ‘I was holding the ball.’ A third down sack doesn’t really bother me as much as a first or second sack because if you just hurry up and get the ball out of your hand and don’t get the first down anyway, you’re punting the ball.
“We don’t want sack fumbles. There were just some times there, as we all saw, that things kind of got a little out of whack and out of kilter. We have to be better, but I don’t think it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh. We can’t block anybody.’”

In total, Nebraska recorded just 36 rushing yards against Minnesota. In contrast, the Golden Gophers tallied 186 yards in the ground game.
Nobody outpaced Minnesota running back Darius Taylor, who erupted for 148 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 24 carries. Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey was also stellar, completing 16-of-his-20 pass attempts for 153 yards and a touchdown, without throwing an interception.
While Minnesota fans didn’t hesitate to celebrate their team’s victory on Friday, they’re no strangers to defeating Nebraska. The Golden Gophers have won their last five meetings with the Cornhuskers.
Nebraska will have a chance to bounce back from the loss next week when it hosts Northwestern. Meanwhile, Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck and Co. will aim to only build on their momentum as they square off against Iowa on the road.
