Nevada safety Matthew Mason commits to BYU

Las Vegas (Nev.) Faith Lutheran safety Matthew Mason took his official visit to BYU over the weekend and that is all he needed. Arizona State was in the mix. He visited San Diego State and UNLV was pushing hard to keep him home, but he wants to be part of the program in Provo.
“My official visit was amazing,” Matthews told On3. “I had some questions and I wanted to learn more about the school and all of my questions were answered. It just felt really good to be there and be around the people at BYU.”
Jay Hill is Mason’s lead recruiter. He oversees the defense for BYU and the two have quickly bonded.
“Coach Hill is a coach that I trust with everything. He is a great guy, he is a great coach and he has a big plan for me in the defense. We talked a lot and went over a lot of things. He believes in my ability, he feels I can compete for a spot on the field right away and I am excited to play for him.”
The new commit has attended a game at BYU once before. He is the nephew of Jeff Scott, the former USF head coach, and when the Bulls played there in 2021, Mason was there. He can’t wait to get back.

“The atmosphere is awesome at BYU. They have great fans and it is a great school. Going there, I will get a great education and get to play in a great atmosphere.”
BYU is getting a versatile player in Mason
Faith Lutheran head coach Jay Staggs shares his thoughts on Mason:
“Matthew’s tangibles pop on film; his length, speed, and physicality, but his intangibles are what set him apart. A lot of guys are long, a lot can run really well, a lot can tackle, but very rarely do they possess all three.
“Matthew has a high level of AEIC (Attitude/Effort/Intent/Consistency), whether in the box, in the air or flat out chasing down the ball across the field. Matthew has dominant speed and an extremely violent finish, but his “want to” and execution set him apart. We believe in Speed-Surprise-Violence of Actions and Matthew lives it on the gridiron.”
