Shortly after kickoff, Oregon State at Texas Tech entered a weather delay. Lightning was detected in the area, leading to the pause in action.

The delay came at 12:28 in the first quarter, just a few plays into Texas Tech’s first drive. The Red Raiders were facing a 3rd and 1 from the Oregon State 41-yard line when the game came to a halt.

UPDATE: At 5:30 p.m. ET, Texas Tech said it appears lightning is moving out of the area. The PA announcer later announced a restart time of 6:10 p.m. ET.

Oregon State got the ball to start the game and went three-and-out on the opening possession. Maalik Murphy went 1-for-2 for six yards to get things underway before Texas Tech took over.

Oregon State marks the final non-conference tuneup for Texas Tech and its overhauled roster. The Red Raiders cruised past Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Kent State to start the 2025 season after becoming one of the big winners this offseason as they look to become a key player in a loaded Big 12.

Joey McGuire knows the task ahead facing the Beavers at Jones AT&T Stadium, though. Murphy began his college career at Texas before playing at Duke last year. Now at Oregon State, McGuire sees the types of throws Murphy can make and how that fits with the other skill players on the Beavers roster.

“He’s (Murphy) big… he’s got a huge arm. He can make all the throws. We’re going to have to get him off his mark,” McGuire said. “They’ve got a really good running back. He’s very impressive. They have a receiver, (Trent) Walker, number seven, that is a big target for them. I think he caught like nine balls in their first game against Cal.

“Defensively, they’ve got an edge, 6’5, he’s number 25 (Nikko)Taylor, 265 pounds… big safety number 17. They’re going to be a big, physical team. I think they’ll challenge us up front offensively, to see how much we’ve grown, and then they’ll definitely challenge us defensively.”
